Would someone please remove Darrel's ad for the damascus Apogee from these forums! While I was never really impressed with the looks of the Apogee, this damned thing is REALLY starting to grow on me! The lines are absolutely beautiful and are perfectly complimented by the anodized handle, damascus blade and those confounded thumbstuds. There is only three things keeping me from purchasing one:

1) lack of funds
2) I could never justify carrying and using this knife
3) my home is not a museum and therefore it would be unappropriate for display purposes

Darrel, I would settle for a compromise in lieu of removing the picture. If you could kindly donate one of these to the "Knifenuts With Limited Funds" charity, I would personally see that it found a good home

What your describing is the exact thought behind the apogee. Slow infiltration on the knife buyers minds eye in a positive way. Its a sleeper design. Takes a bit to get the idea.

Some knife designs just smack you in the face . BUT if you look again and again they loose there appeal. The apogee was designed to grow on folks. No flash in the pan.. become a classic.

Thanks for the very kind words..

I wish there was a PO knifemaker fund that donated to knifemakers so folks like you could have the knives you wanted :}

We both would be living in a ideal world..

Blademan,
I too was not all that wild about the shape of the Apogee. I think it had something to do with the rounded ends of the handle.
THEN........
I saw one that a dealer had at the Olando Art Knife Show last month.......This taught me a lesson!! Never, EVER judge a knife by a picture in a magazine or on the internet!!

I too, fell for the blade shape of the apogee, but originally couldn't get around the handle shape. Turns out the handle is extremely ergo. Very comfortable which is what you want in a using knife and this design was always expected to be a user.

Dr. Lathe is very right about pictures. I've seen knives that looked horrible in a pic and were amazing in person. The photo didn't do it justice. On the other hand I've also been blown away by a photo and disappointed when having the knife in hand. There is no alternative to first hand contact.

I can hardly wait for mine to get here. I got millenium apogee #2 and am having some extra work done on it. Maybe have two more weeks to go.

Man, do I have a bad case of the jealousies these days! Just thought I would bring some sunshine to those awaiting these gorgeous knives. Wise choices fellas. I don't expect you to be disappointed. I know that I surely would not

. I guess that I can just try to ignore the ad when it comes up!

You can not appreciate the design of the Apogee(regular/Extreme/Millenium editions) until you handle & carry it for a while. As gorgeous as my Extreme is, I wouldn't think about leaving it home - it is one of my daily carry/use knives and Darrel told me he wouldn't want it any other way! If I scratch or bang it up I send it back & for a very nominal fee it comes back like new. There are very few makers that can approach the level of Darrel's artistry in design & when you add consumate workmanship you are experiencing one of life's greatest pleasures. Blademan 13, one word of advice - START SAVING YOUR MONEY - YOU NEED AN APOGEE!

I got to see and handle the one Darrel made for Dexter at the Blade Show last year. I consider Darrel a friend, but I honestly speak when I say it was one of the most impressive knives I saw last year.
