I've been eyeing the Darrel Ralph Madd Maxx folders. I really like the look of the knife. I'm looking for some opinions good and/or bad about these knives.

Do you like or dislike them? Why? Anyone have any particular opinion on the options? Blade styles, materials, decoration, etc. I know a lot of this is subjective, but I'm sort of in the "information gathering" stage at this point.

The one I've really got my eye on is this one:

Except with a 4" dagger type blade.

However, according to Darrel the pin decorations won't allow for the robopower function.

Is the robopower function any good? Does anyone think it's worth sacraficing some aesthetics for? Again I know this is a rather subjective question, but I just want to see what people think.

Thanks.

Felder, welcome to Bladeforums!

I have an original style Madd Maxx dagger, 5.5" blade in D2. Awesome, devastating knife. I bet the robo-assist is cool, but like all auto functions, it is totally unnecessary with a knife like the Maxx. All you have to do is give the flipper a flick and the blade snaps open and locks in place. Or you can catch the flipper against .. anything .. and "wave" it open, like an Emerson. Even with my 5.5, you can hardly see it move unless you're ready for it, it's so fast and smooooth.

All my Darrel Ralph's are sharp. That 4" will be a little razor, too. But remember, a dagger will have a diamond cross-section, rather than the full flat grind of the bowie or bullnose. This makes it less of a slicer. For ordinary purposes, this is a minimal inconvenience. But it wouldn't work as well as my CUDA Maxxes in the kitchen :)

I used to own a 5.5" dagger bladed Madd Maxx and it was a great knife. The action was silky smooth, the blade was very sharp and the lockup was perfect. It was a heck of a nice knife. I sold it so that I could afford a different knife, not because i had any problem with the Madd Maxx at all.

If I were to get another Madd Maxx, I would choose the bowie blade style. For me, that would be a personal preference since the knife did not see very much use.

What are you planning on doing with the knife? Is it purely a collectible, or do you have a particular use in mind?

I have an old style Mad Maxx, the talonite bullnose, serial #1, and I think it's a great knife (in fact, I have another on order).

The robo is definitely cool but I think the knife is just as good without...if you like the pins, get'em :)

i have a 4" maxx spear poit w/carbon fibre handles and talonite blade,#3 of only 4 ever made (from darrel) an excellent knife, imho has the best workmanship of any of my customs, bar none.

no problems, the talonite sharpens easier than i thought it would, really holds an edge, razor sharp, made of ti, CF and talonite,w/a frame lock, whats not to like??

a very good one, imho, mine aint for sale.....

I have the 4" DLC Maxx on order and I've talked to Darrel numerous times. He really knows his ****. I can't wait to get home and hold it.

I own the Black DLC coat pearl inlay max shown on his website. His knives are light and solid, with a smooth mechanism. I didn't opt for the assisted opener on my 4" Maxx. I would recommend going with it, though. I don't have problems with mine opening, but it takes some finesse.
The fit and finish is impeccable. The Maxx is superb design. I want to get a trident blade Maxx next, or an EDC or Aftermath... they're all nice!

That's the exact same knife I'm getting. In fact it was your post that made me order one. Damn you!!! :p

Sheesh, now you have me looking at the ones with pins...this one is a BEAUTY! I don't normally go for pearl but this one just works for me...I also like the fact that the blade is a "full grind" dagger...hmmm, maybe I need a third Mad Maxx...
