Another piece I saw at Darrel's shop. He sent this pic over to me. The scales are fluted damscus, an assisted opener, Ti frame s30v blade. Opens super fast and locks up like a vault! I like the dammy scales. They are super grippy!!

What blade length and when was it made?

"Fluted damascus? Is that a first?"

Usually, nothing DDR makes is an original idea of his own.

Um...where did you get that idea from?

Admittedly, I'm sure someone has fluted damascus before, but saying everything he does is ripped off is quite an accusation.

Ouch, jeez. I like all of his stuff; who else makes really gigantic folders that still can be comfortably carried in pocket?

Damascus scales seem like they'd be a bit rust prone, no? Unless they're stainless or ti-mascus, that'd be really cool.

Folks thanks for the kind words.

The damascus is stainless Mike Norris.
It will not rust.
The inlay is domed and fluted.

Imp The blade is just under 4 inches!;) :D
Sorry for Imp's little whine folks.
I've been making knives longer and done many things first Imp. I dont know about fluting damscus. Fluting has been done for ages so no big deal!
You may want to check your history on some of your comments Imp. I feel most of what I do was before you were collecting knives sir.

Steve,
Imp is the guy that Brian banned on tkcl for his manners.
Imp is referring to the assisted opener situation.

That is truly an amazing knife, as are all the DDR's I have seen. Right now I have a CUDA Maxx, but I hope to someday get a custom or two!

As for original, I dont know of any other knifemakers whos work looks like Mr. Ralph's.

That is a sweet Maxx. I have a teensy (4") one, DLC black with pearl inlays. Wonderful workmanship. The Maxx design just keeps getting better...

“Fluting” has been around forever. I cannot count the number of knives that pass through my hands that have some form of fluting.
Scales/bolsters/inlays are routinely fluted - seems not to have ever been an issue until now

BTW- One of the requirements of the ABS is to make a fluted handle.

SHOW REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant is responsible for presenting the signed ABS test form and the test blade in person at the ABS Annual Show and Meeting. No modification of any sort is to be made to the test blade following the completion of the test.
If the applicant cannot attend in person, due to special circumstances, the applicant must contact the Chairman of the ABS for permission to have the knives presented for judging.
The applicant must present at least five (5)completed forged knives of various styles. At least one of these must be an art knife meeting the ABS requirement of a traditional pattern welded Damascus European Quillon type dagger with three hundred (300) or more forged welded layers. (See attached sketch of a European Quillion Dagger. This is a sample only. Sheath not required.) Only 2 folders will be permitted and hatchets and tomahawks are not permissible.

Hmmm, knives have a blade, handle, they open, they close, some don't.... WTF????

Damn dude. Troll some other thread, don't be such an ass.  :o :p

That knife is awesome in person, too.
I love his new designs and amazed that he keeps coming up with them. I guess he has too, though, considering how many makers have helped themselves to them over the years.
