We're nearing the end of Dashain now, a very special time in Nepal.
For those that don't know this two week long festival occurs in October every year and is associated with the worship of multiple Hindu deities like Parvati, Durga and Ram. It's the most anticipated and largest festival in the Himalayas, much like Christmas in other parts of the world but with spicier food and and animal sacrifice.
There are different events that occur as the festival progresses including Astami and Naawami, days where we give thanks and worship the machines and tools in their lives (including our bench grinders and Bisnu's scooters as shown in these photos). All the different generations in the family get together and bless each other by placing tika on each others foreheads while leaving offerings to show thanks.
Today was the second last day and while covid has certainly put a dampener on things the essentials still remain- Family, Rest and Worship. It will take a lot more than covid to stop these traditions taking place.
Take care,
Andrew and the team at Kailash
