Happens every night from about 9 to 9:15.
A day without BF, that was unpleasant. I suddenly realized how often I check in and how much I enjoy pretty knife pictures and informative commentary.
I did learn that BF has a Facebook page though, which was a good way to communicate what happened and that they were working on the problem(s).
It's a combination of problems, many of which are outside our control. Prior to yesterday's outage we were undergoing a UDP attack that took down our hosts entire network unless they "null routed" our server; cloud flare eliminated that. After that we had to repair damage which was made much more difficult because of obstacles from the hosting company and their attempts to "fix" the attacks.
Comparing our site to others is in many ways apples to oranges. XDA is a developer website, comprised entirely of developer professionals who have no problem hacking up scripts and I'll bet have done so to their version of vB5 (which has been widely criticized for it's problems with large forums). Given those criticisms and the difficulties reverting back to previous versions of vB from 5, I'm reluctant to jump whole hog into a different version that has been called a resource hog by everyone who's used it. If you'll also notice, they have ads everywhere which means tons of revenue coming in for their site, which means a lot more money to throw at problems. In other words, they have a lot of advantages we don't.
I've already had talks with our hosting management about what happened on Thurs / Fri and will be dealing with them on Monday again about the issue, after we've had a chance to detail the problems. In the meantime, we have more stuff that will be going on this evening as we continue to work on issues that have been presented.
