Can anybody date this Cattaraugus sleeveboard or provide a potential range of years for it? It is 3 1/2" closed. Thanks.

Fred,
You'll probably get a good answer here, but you might post this in Mr. Levine's forum, as well.
Good luck,

Bill

I can't date the knife, but I will say that is a very nice piece. If that yours, I envy you, in a good natured knifenut kind of way.

Thank, OT. Yes it's a knife from my collection. It isn't particularly rare or valuable but it is a good looking example of great knife made by great American knife company and its blades are all there and the backsprings are strong.

If you've read the thread about "professionally cleaned" knives down the forum a piece you'll appreciate this "amateur cleaned" knife. I came to the conclusion that this knife should be used. I haven't had the guts to sharpen the blades yet but I did clean it up and I'm happy with the results. Perhaps tomorrow I'll apply a little work on those edges and put it use. It would be fun to know its age in case someone sees me using it and asks.

I have a vintage Russell barlow I'm thinking about doing the same thing to. OK, collectors, you can shudder now.

For what its worth, I say go ahead and use that knife. If you get satisfaction out of carrying and using a nice oldie like that, then thats its true worth. To much worrying about what a knife is worth these days instead of enjoying what you have.

HI!

I am the one who posted the "professionally cleaned" thread and I have to admit that you did a great job. PLEASE send to me before you decide to use. HA HA HA :D . I would love to have an example like that in my collection. It is just beautiful. I am sure that it will be a great user but gosh I would love to see it remain as is. I know, that is the collector part coming out in me. There are lots of new manufacturers that make good knifes for using. A nice piece like this one for display for future generations to see. I am not taking a stand on using knifes, heck I do it everyday. But I have a fondness for bone handled knives like this. GREAT JOB, :)

It is true that I have many knives I could use instead. It's an interesting question. I have a pretty nice collection of fountain pens and I use every single one of them. The collectors shudder but I'm a collector too. I just have a different set of priorities than they do. If the pen can't be used, then I don't have any interest in owning it.

This knife was designed to be carried in a pocket and to cut things. I certainly see no harm in letting it do what it was designed to do. I think it will do it very well and give me some pleasure in having a fine old knife like this in my pocket. I'll let it sit for a while before I sharpen it. There certainly is no rush. I can get to work on the Russell barlow which is in better shape than this one was before I cleaned it up.

Thanks for the comments about the knife. I think it's rather handsome myself.
