Are the date codes on 'zaans the same as sebenzas? e.g. "A 11" connotes the first quarter of 2011?

Thanks in advance.

The date code on the scale is the date the scale was made, not the date the knife as a whole was made. There could easily be weeks or months between a particular piece being produced and then it being used in a knife.

So theres no way a zaan with A 11 can have a birthday of sept 2011, correct?

For what its worth, I just took possession of a tanto Umnumzaan with a b11 handle code and March of 2012 birth date. The date codes I have seen in the first few years production, like around 2009, the knives date code/birth dates were typically were around 1-2 quarters (3-6 months) apart, but in the last year or so they seem to have spread to a year or more apart.

One things for certain, the birth date should never precede the handle date, lol!

So I shouldn't sweat it that my Zaan's bday is Jan 2014, but my scale is stamped B12? That seems like quite a spread- well over a year!

No, not at all. I have a small Sebenza that has scales at least that much older, maybe even more so than the born on date. I called CRK and asked them this very question. They said that is not unusual and not to worry.

Thanks for the fast and thorough reply Corskin! That puts my mind at ease. This is only my 2nd CRK purchase- I bought a 25 3 months ago and thought that was all I needed... Lol

...all I needed. Oh man, that's funny! 😂

Great! Now I have another data point to add to my CRK spreadsheet. Need to start looking at the scales...

So will both scales have the same date code? Or can they be mixed? I assume since they are machined it wouldn't matter.

LOL!

Here are all of the things I track. Notice the newly added Scale Code column:

Knife - Handle - Blade - Lug/Pin - Born On Date - Cost - Shipping - Scale Code - Bought - Seller - Email - Store - Date Purchased - Date Received - Clip / Extras - Notes

Here is an image with some of the columns hidden:

That's a mighty fine CRK family- something for me to look up to! I saw a thread today with one of our knife brother's 100th CRK purchase, catalogued with notes and pics! I really like your spreadsheet idea stang! I suppose I'd better start keeping track now while my first purchases are still fresh in mind, even though I tell myself that there's no way I need thousands of dollars of fancy CRK knives... I'm already starting to justify, especially when I buy used, that I can always get all/most of my money back at any time- and that's what I tell wifey. How do the rest of you guys justify this awesome obsession, er hobby? Do you have a favorite(s)?..or are they like children, each special in their own way?

Thanks! I have a long way to go with my collection. I never meant to have this money and have been planning on selling 3 or 4 of them to repay some other funds I borrowed from. But i will have a record when I do sell them.
