I just bought a 529 and it has an inverted V next to the 529 but it has a . (dot) inside the inverted V) is this still a 1988 production?

mb,

Might be a test hole for hardness. Howabout a pic. I dont think 529's went by dot but I dont see them in any catalog before 1988.

I'm going to say yes...here's a pic of one that I asked about sometime ago, IIRC was told that it, the dot, was for a change in the design/engineering of the model during the production year. HTH, Preston

pjsjr,
that is exactly what it looks like and sorry I haven't received it yet, got it on the bay for $9.99, in mint condition, Ill post pics when I get it but, if I understand your remark it means that it was a design change during the production year? these were originally produced in '88 according to my '88 catalog.

MB, Yes, I think pj is correct as thats the way I recall . Perhaps, your thinking why was there a design change the same year it was first produced ? Well, we've discussed this a lot here and it is many reasons . It could be a mid-year change on the frame material/steel or pivot bushing or lock bar material, ect.. There are many models with the stamp you mention . Joe H. wrote an article on this subject several years back (I'll try to get you the issue) and I remember the list of knives/models was extensive with a odd stamping . His conclusion was that some of them they knew what the change was but most of them they didn't . Several, models come to my mind that required changes after they were introduced . The 700 series (lock failed) the Sawby (lock failed) 110 (bushing change) ect.. DM

Joe's article, Blade Stampings appears in the December issue 2005 . Another Bill Keys wrote on ECR (engineering change request) . Is good . Then another in Tidbits, no author's name is given but maybe Joe or Larry as it has their wording and style, in the June 2006 issue . In this article the double minus is discussed on the 110's . In a memo Bill Keys (Dec. 5, 1991) writes the stamp -110- is for the ECR of the 110 blade and rocker redesign has been approved . Some good stuff on these stampings . Hope this helps . DM

Dave you are a wealth of information and it is appreciated. where do u find these articles from years ago, its amazing. but nobody has said if they thought I got a good deal. if nobody else, I think I got a good deal at $9.99.

Sorry, I didn't mention it before...but really...when you get a NIB 1988 Buck for $9.99 do you have to be told you got a good deal:thumbup::D:thumbup:. Preston

Here's one... Same mark... Got mine for less... don't tell no one... ...

I remember those discussions and I don't think a definite conclusion was drawn.

In the article that Dave mentions, Joe said he didn't have a clue why the dot was on his knife (I believe Joe's was a 110).

So.......I don't see why it couldn't be a Rockwell test as Fritz suggested.

If anybody knows of a thread or article where a definite answer was given on this question, please post it or a link to it.

Thanks guys, I was blessed with a good memory . Dave, I think you know what your dot stamp was for (lock change) . This stuff interests me and Joe and Larry and all you guys, ect.. DM

Did your good memory forget that Joe said he didn't know why the dot was there?

;)

On another stamp question what does a -110- mean I reacll thios being talked about but cant remember???????????????? by the way those are dashes not dots

In 1992 they started out with the one dash and the second was added after an engineering change (change to spring holder).

We see quite a few of both the dash and the double-dash, but very few of the mysterious V-Dots.

Which is why they're mysterious.

:)

thanks for the info BG, saw a 110 with the apparently not so mysterious -110-. Thought it might be worth watching.

Oh yes, they are worth having if you can get them in nice condition at a decent price. Some say they are more common than the single dash, but I've never heard a for sure answer on that one either.

I buy both when I get a good shot at them.

BG i'll keep that in mind, I look for all the different things. I'll lit you know what happens.
