I searched and couldn't find anything on this. I have a large Sebbie with the grips stamped 98 inside. Is this the BG42 steel or the S30V steel?

I was expecting you saying that you were "Dating" your Sebbie, like a girlfriend when I clicked in...
98 should be BG42, but that isn't a tell tale way to find out, incase it had a blade change.
Take it apart and look at the blade by the pivot hole, if there is no stamp it is BG42 if it has a "S" it's s30v if it's a "V" it's s35vn.

Yeah, by the title I thought this thread was going in a way different direction
