What's your take on the Datrex emergency food bars? Seems like a very simple and cost-effective way of calorie intake.

Thanks!

I have used them. They aren't bad, but they have got to be washed down and are very crumbly.

They are in my BOBs. No heat to eat, space saving, tons of calories, and last a long time...oh and they taste alright. Nothing too bad in them either. Just make sure you have water. They are not horribly dry they are more crumby than anything.

Mainstays are nice two I prefer the way the datrex are wrapped better. They are a buttery nutty dessert bar that will keep you alive

Acually, they are mostly grease (high fat & energy content) and are devised to be eaten during boating survival situations where you do not have much access to water. The greasiness of the bars help you to work them down if water is in short supply.

While they do contain the necessary calories for survival, they contain such little mass that your body will probably tell you that you are still hungry, so don't expect to feel full if you are just using them as your only nutritional source.

Both the Mainstay and Datrex are enriched vitamins A, B1, B2, B7, B12, D, E and mins. The mainstays are a lemony butter cookie...there sweet too. They are greaser...no moist however not individually packed...I still need water with them. They are said to be non-thirst provoking and US Coast Guard Approved. They actually taste alright! No cholesterol, there even kosher (not that I care). The Datrex were drier to me. They are good for a BOB?Car/Boat but I wouldnt rely on them at the house.

I bought some Datrex to have on hand in case of whatever. I have not tried them because I thought if I opened a pack I would have to eat them all or throw them away, as I assume they have a short shelf life after opening. I assume they do not have individual wrappers under the outer covering. True?

I have tried it, and thought they were alright. I have some stored away just in case I need some calories.

Shelf life is 5 years. Datrex are individually wrapped once you open them but they are not air tight after you open the main pouch. So just be aware.

I have some that expires soon, I'll probably use it for backpacking food this summer to burn through it.

I rotate them for used when day-hiking and my son is allowed to pilfer anything nearing expiration. I much prefer Datrex to Mainstay although there isn't much difference between the two. They make a good addition to your bug-out-bag or any other emergency bags.
