Hey Forum Peoples!!,

I'm back again. So, all in all, I have to say...trying to convince my daughter to learn self-defense and urban survival
skills hasn't quite panned out. She always smiles and says, "I'll be ok.". Aaaaaaaaargh!!! -_- Meh. Pfffffffft. Blah. How
annoying. I'll give up....................for now. Hehe. I mean seriously? Am I a bad dad? I just want the girl to be safe at
school! Cripes! -_- Well, at least she's learned to park her car closer to the store entrances, and within better lit areas at night..
what little she actually goes out at night. She has at least started to learn awareness. :-)

So, in addition to the typical Urban Survival skills, what do you guys all think? Is self-defense a priority? Awareness certainly
should be, but should physical self-defense be a priority? I've trained in it for years and it's fun. Hmmm...I guess it's less
video game and tv time?

Then also there is the fact that a copperhead got into my mother-in-law's basement. I found the skin. Found the snake too, it
was already dead. Any ideas how one could get in there? It's pretty well sealed up.

The best option is to avoid violence. Head over to http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/ if you are interested in urban survival strategies, crime and violence in general.

You might also ponder this quote from the TV series ROME.
Gaius Octavian Caesar: At best I'll be a middling swordsman.
Titus Pullo: It's better than nothing.
Gaius Octavian Caesar: There you are wrong. The graveyards are full of middling swordsmen. Best not to be a swordsman at all than a middling swordsman.

she's at the driving age already so i think it's too late - you should've started her out way early like mistwalker's daughter :o she might be open to carrying pepper spray at least.

if she meets a guy who's into the survival skills then she might become more open-minded learning them though.

Does your mother-in-law have any enemies? Joking of course. I would wonder if a door got left open and the snake was looking for a cooler place. When I was growing up we found a snake in the basement and I believe that's how it got in.

LOL! She has a habit of going in and out of the basement door when doing yardwork. I've scouted the woods around her home, I've seen a few snakes already. Problem is, when one finally does get back in there, it'll be ME she calls to come and collect it.. I've got enough problems without poking around in a basement looking for a pissed off snake. Stepped on a large rat snake a couple years ago, grabbed it with my toes and pulled on it. Copperheads are another thing altogether--plenty of hidey-peekey-poppy-outty holes in that basement. Too many boxes!!!

Dating....ugh...that's even worse!!

Self defense is a must have skill IMO. If you can't defend yourself, then who will? I have always been tought to not start the fight, but to end it. I don't go looking for fights, but when it happens you better be prepared and have some skills to protect yourself. I have a 1 yr old, and he will learn how to fight before he goes to school, just something my grandpa passed to my dad and my dad onto me. Yes, self defense is a must. Especially for a woman.

Especially for a young woman who's never gone out on a date before....UGH. Thank you, JV3, for pointing out the dating thing -_- lol.

buy a shotgun and get in the habit of cleaning it while in front of the house next to a shovel when her date stops by to pick her up :D

Having emotional understanding and confidence and a strong sense and ability to advocate for yourself and make decisions in the face of adversarial people - ranging from mildly manipulative to downright aggressive - will serve her in avoiding conflict and generally navigating this world moreso than self-defense. Often times self-defense can just be an avenue to learn these skills for some people.

A lot of the predatory tactics and pitfalls that happen to young women happen because of our social acculturation of women to be submissive. Being a strong and empowered women goes a long way towards self-protection.

Hehehehe...she'd skin me alive if I did that. It'd be kinda funny though. :-)

True. She's shy as can be and skinny as a rail. That's why I worry.
