This may not be big news, but I thought it was an anecdote worth sharing.

I was about to open a bottle of wine. My 11 year old daughter was there and I asked her whether I should use the purpose built corkscrew or the one on my Vic Skipper. Skipper, said she.

Her: “Wait. Can *I* try?”
Me: “You can, but you won’t get it.”

She got it and was so proud!

The SAK corkscrews work poorly with some corks because the spiral diameter is so small. But many wines are now packaged with synthetic corks that are less likely to crumble or break.

I've ripped a couple corks in half with a SAK corkscrew, when I only screw it in to the bottom of the spiral.

I now screw it into the cork all the way up to the flat part, so that the screw gets to the bottom of the cork; I haven't ripped any more corks since I started doing it this way.

Sometimes, a cork seems to be "locked" in and it is a monumental effort to get it to move. (most often with the rubber/plastic foam corks) In this case, the leverage of a proper corkscrew helps a lot. I might need to look into getting that fancy model with the lever, as I do drink a lot of wine.

Just guessing at this as I have not yet tried it, but ... Instead of making the first move of the cork a pull, you could try to first tap it. Once the cork has broken loose and moved a little, it should be easier to pull. Of course, the Wine Master makes it easier yet as you mention. (That's what I do.)

I spent most of my childhood looking for a chance to use the corkscrew on my SAK. It was the one function I had never used. Lol.

I had my SAK at least 10 years before the misspent part of my youth. Even then it was beer not wine. Lol.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever used any corkscrew ever.

The corkscrew is very handy for untangling knots so it got some use.

Yeah, once the mind is opened to the idea of pulling things out of other things with it, it can be useful.
I used it the other day to pull the pourer out of a 1.75 L bottle of whiskey to more easily pour it into my decanter. Probably, it's better for recycling with it pulled out, too...
