Kid's turning nine in just less than a month. Loves fishing and just recently baited her own hook and then took the hook out using the step-on-the-fish method. Wants to get into carving, which we tried once or twice, but I wasn't in the best of moods at the time, so a little impatient. Got her her own tool kit last year for Christmas and she really enjoys using that to fix things, mainly replacing batteries in toys. Cost would like to keep under $30. Like her tool box and her tackle box on her wish list, she likes pink (but not a deal breaker).

I've considered the following:
BK-13 Remora (w/ pink para wrap)
Opinel #?
Mora ?
SAK
Multi-tool

I like the idea of a small fixed blade for safety, a lock on a folder, but also the tools provided in the SAK/Multi. What do the fine lads and lasses at BF recommend as a starter knife?

(I'll follow up next year for her brother as he starts work on his Whittling Chip)

I'd recommend a SAK Tinker. Not a locking blade, but she should learn how to use a knife. Vic is now making an old Wenger model (with the Vic trademark) with a locking blade as part of their Eco line (I think (?) it is the S111 model, but not sure). A smallish Mora would also be my choice for a fixed blade; good steel, inexpensive. The only thing I don't like are the plastic sheaths, but I'm sure you can find a leather sheath that would fit.

If it is a SAK/Multi, I'm not worried about the lock. I wasn't sure about the Mora sheaths, but she's not running around with a belt anyway. I would carry it and just use it to house it in a pack or on the work table.

My first knife was a Buck 110 folder and it’s what I gifted to my 11 year old nephew who’s been using is for simple carving and fishing in the Boy Scouts. Buck let’s you order them customized if you want from their website.

I'm reading this while engraving some swiss army sentinels and can't help but think something in that size would be a good choice. It might be a little more blade than she needs but she can grow into it. If you went with the Swiss Army Centurion you'd also have the nice locking blade with some other useful tools while being just over $30.

so I'm putting my google-fu to use as you guys are making your suggestions. I see a lot of people, outside of this thread, tout the tinker so just had a second look. I like the tinker, but would like scissors - that's apparently a super tinker. I keep scrolling the page, there's a tinker/classic combo - a regular knife for her and a mini for a tackle box? Now that I click on that, i see a suggestion for the fisherman! This appears to be the super tinker plus the fish scaler/hook removal. Am I right? This may be what I'm looking for. Heading over to SAKWiki. Keep the ideas coming.

Any reason the tinker is loved more so than a super tinker?

RCS/Halbrust - I am still coming BF on the dozier reviews as well. I have three tabs open just for that at the moment.

SAK. Great first knife. Let her LEARN on a non-locking....then she'll be able to handle anything.

Victorinox makes the Evolution line where the blade locks. I have the S111 and really like it. The lock is not as strong as on a Spyderco or Buck, but it will do the job.

I gave my kids a swiss army classic for their first knives. The scissors are just as useful as the knife. I put it on a lanyard so they wouldn't use it and they hung it around their neck. I wouldn't get a larger blade or locking blade knife until the child is used to using a smaller slipjoint knife. Any cuts with a small knife are small compared to a larger knife :)

That is a cool ass program. Thank you - was not aware of it.

Also to DocT - checking the Evo line out now. The junior is somewhat appealing given the blunt tip, while the S111 you mention appears to be a locking tinker with shaped handles.
