I bought some do it yourself knife kits (plastic and wood models) for my daughter's 8th birthday. She absolutely LOVED them - I helped her assemble them, and was explaining to her the importance of safety while putting them together. We also talked about safety, and also about how she should open, hold, and close the knives properly. Her mom took the pics, she also loves knives btw.

Congrats. I got my daughter the Dragonfly for Christmas. She loved it so much, she wants a live one now. :D

Aside from teaching her knife safety, my wife and I feel it's important for her to explore her talents, including martial arts (3rd year), swimming (2nd year), dance (on and off 3 yrs), and a bevy of other activities she enjoys. Kids today grow up in a sedentary life, surrounding themselves with electronic devices that stifle growth instead of "doing things" like older pre-sat tv generations. I think having her do activities (both girly and not so girly) will help her become a better all around person. Learn how to do things/take care of yourself and you don't have to depend on others who might want to take advantage of you... just my .02 worth as a parent and HS teacher for 13+ years.

I picked up 4 kits from Klecker at the recent Blade show for the girls(3 and 11). They love them! My 3 year old thinks she has a real knife and carries it everywhere. She even "cuts" soft fruits with them. Glad your daughter loves them too!

She loves flicking the Klecker open - loves the "click" of the blade locking in place. One of the 1st things she did this morning was look for the knife and flick it open. Nice to hear your kids are enjoying theirs as well.

I bet! Great little knife. My daughter won't get a live blade until she shows she's responsible enough to earn it, hopefully by her birthday next year.

Congrats, glad she loves them. My 2 3/4 yr old keeps asking when I'm gonna give her a knife when she sees me fiddling around with mine. I've already shown her a couple SAKs I've set aside for her for when she gets a little older.

Had no idea these existed. Just bought two glow in the dark ones for my visiting nephews.

I think you are on the right track LGM, I commend you. Both of my kids have real knives. Of course they are 15 and 13 and were taught knife safety and use a long time ago. The kids both learned on slip joints and have gravitated to fixed blades.

Anyway, just a few months ago I was in a knife store with my 13 year old and he saw the plastic knives like your first pic and he asked me if he could get one. I just laughed and said "ok" even though I didn't really understand why he wanted to "go backwards" in my perspective. He just said they were cool. He carries that thing all over the house with him, flicking it out....I guess just to cut the boredom or something. Maybe that's his way of telling me he wants a folder. Perhaps I'll give him the opportunity to earn one soon.

She looks proud of her 'custom' knives. Nice work!:thumbup:

I've thought about getting one of those wooden Case XX knife kits for novelty, but I've never seen these larger plastic kits before. I need to get one for my nephew when he gets a little older.

Just picked up a couple of these for my nephews and one for myself! :D
I'm sure they will like them and my brother in law will hate them!

Just both my kids izulas a week or two ago, they love them, I wish I would have known something like this was around.
