Howdy from Texas!
I am wondering if anyone out there in knifeland has had the chance
to try out one of Dave Becks wilderness survival knives in actual wilderness settings.
I am thinking about getting one and would like to know if this knife
is a good cutter. Is it hard to sharpen? How does it chop?
How sharp will it get?
Any info would be appreciated.
...........thanks Woodlore

i have had mine for a while now and I just love it. The fit and finish are beautiful and the balance is excellent. I have been carrying it around the farm and forest chopping away at branches that have fallen as well as making some traps and whittling away at wood. I have found that it handles these tasks with ease as long as you do your part. The edge comes sharper than utility but not quite shaving sharp and I have not had to sharpen it yet but even after all my chopping and carving it still cut a beef steak in half like a freshly sharpened chef's knife. The main blade will be very similar to a lot of regular knives to sharpen but the inner blade and hook will require a different technique that Dave explains in the manual. I have not owned any other knives in Starret 01 steel so I don't really know how this stuff is to work with. I have been using Sentry's tuff cloth on the steel to keep it lookin good and the sheath is just getting broken in to a nice comfy fit. I highly recommend this knife either for a showpiece/collector or as a working/bush knife. I can't wait to try it out skinning in the fall.

I love mine, you can see pictures of it I just put on my web page here-

I don't think words can describe how incredible this knife is. I tried to describe it on my web page, but I let the photos speak for themselves.

Mine would shave hair out of the box, and it chops like a small hatchet. The O-1 will take a very fine edge. It carves like no other knife I've seen and it's the most comfortable knife I've ever held or used.

I just want to thank those people for their helpful information on the Dave Beck Wilderness Survival Knife.I am new to the forums and I think this so cool that knife people have a place to get together and talk shop.
........thanks again Woodlore

I still want the Woodlore knife too. I just wish the exchange rate was in our favor. The first knife I ever made was my version of the Woodlore knife. Maybe somday I'll make an exact copy. I can't wait until Ray's shows are put out on NTSC DVD, his people tell me that later this year they'll be available to U.S. customers.

The information pertaining to my manuals is classified, sorry. J/K they were gifts, and they are good reading too.

As soon as I can scrape up the money Dave is going to make a knife for me that I designed. It's a wicked survival knife style. I can't wait!

Here's another pic for you...
