I was browsing a big site where people sell things and came across some knives by Dave Yellowhorse marked Buck Custom. After a little googling I learned they were made by DH and sold through Buck. Is that right? Can anyone tell me more about them? I've never heard of them/him before and really like the artwork on them. Even better, if anyone is lucky enough to have one or more, posting some pictures would be awesome.

Stick around and you will get more information and photos than you ever expected.

David Yellowhorse has been customizing Buck Knives for years as well as other makes of knives as well. He has always had a great relationship with Buck while working with them
on customizing a line of knives that are sold by Buck as well as customizing Buck knives and others for sale on his own. His son Brian also does alot of customizing knives as well as
his son Ron. Knives done by David are exceptionally well done and more sought after by collectors.

Here are a few Buck Knives done by David

Born near Lupton Arizona on the vast Navajo Reservation. David developed a talent for working with turquoise from his Grandfather. They sold these items at their store on Route 66 at Lupton near Window Rock. He excelled in working with silver and stone. Then brought this to embellish knife handles. His designs are traditional Navajo. Much of the culture of his people are expressed in his work. I've met and visited with him several
times. Though famous, he is down to earth and always showed manners and respect to me and my family. Something missing in much of our society today. But is ever present in his. You'd have to go and visit or work near there to understand the people. Their talents and traditions.
His work is still highly sought after and Buck has a good relationship with him. DM

Who is DH?

David Yellowhorse has been modifying Buck knives since about 1978,I believe. He has probably done tens of thousands of knives during this period of time. He's also done Case,Gerber and Spyderco knives and may have done others as well.

There's a dealer in Arkansas that has bought thousands of David's knives and he also has a presence on ebay.

Here are a few that I own and I would bet there are many more owners here as well.

His work is truly amazing. I really like all of the pictures you guys posted. That 106 though belongs in a museum IMO. Thanks for the info and pictures. I could look at his work all day.

If you ever find a Yellowhorse knife with a satin finish blade it's likely a very early one. Before he developed a partnership with Buck he would purchase knives at retail level and then work his magic on them. One of the very rarest Yellowhorse items is his handmade sheiths. I have never seen one in person, never seen for sale but only a photo of a completed sale. I have a early 'Lacy' with a satin blade I bought used and hope one day to find the correct sheith. I have only seen a handful of used Dave Yellowhorse knives since 2007 and have admired ever one!
