I recently got hold of a David Murphy Blades knife, Gresham Oregon, with a self portrait of Dave on the blade. The knife is a bird and trout type that measures 7.75 overall and the blade being 3.25 . Appears to be in mint condition. The sheath is hand made, but may not be original to the knife.

I have heard that this is a forerunner to the Gerber knives. I would appreciate it if I can get any help about this knife or a value.

Thanks - - -Richard

There are Murphy knives made by father and son, yours is a newer piece made by the son. The older Murphy(David Z. Murphy) worked by himself with some help from his son in Portland Ore. from the 1930's-1950's. He also contracted with Gerber to make knives in the early 1940's.

His son(David M. Murphy) made knives is California for a little bit in the 50's, then stopped till the 1980's-90's, when your knife was made. Mr. Murphy sadly passed away a few years ago.

I've seen the little knives like yours go in the $75-125 range. He made quite a few of them.
