I'm going through some gear, moving some blades around, ordering some new gear and blades. I'm trying to come up with a couple of good little packs just for day hikes. I'm trying to be as efficient as possible and make sure I have the essentials but not over do it. I was hoping some of you could post up some pics of your packs and gear that you take with you when only going out for the day. Thanks.

Here's one.

I've got a similar set-up in this pack. Nalgene instead of reservoir, a different mess kit, rain pants, and a few other small differences.

Jax718, I just put together a bag for such a purpose. I got all my gear together that would be going into it, & bought a Maxpedition Fat Boy from Howe's Knife Shop. Most of what I have is very similar to Guyon's items, looks like he has everything covered in his picture. I bought my wife a Maxpedition Thermite as well, but this is mostly for her daily meds, some camera items, & a few odds & ends. The area around us is mostly state or county parks, no real threat of having an overnighter, but we have been a little bit bewildered a few times & did not get back to our truck until after dark.
Lay out your kit, decided whether you want a backpack type bag, or a shoulder bag. The shoulder bag was easier for me, 6'3"+, 295lbs. Not too many backpacks make straps that long, negative on the chest & waist straps as well . . . :D
Good luck.
Be safe.

i really like my maxpedition falcon 2. it's my edc/laptop/day hike/camelbak - mountain biking bag actually. it's a do-it-all for me.

here are the two videos i found to be really helpful:

at the very top compartment i keep this cookie tin container:

there's enough room there for an emergency blanket too:

next to an esee-4 for scale:

it looks stuffed but there's still room there for water purification tablets:

contents (clock-wise from left):
1. esee fire kit
2. countycomm peanut lighter
3. ~20 ft of 550 paracord
4. wet wipes
5. contact lense re-wetting drops
6. some tinder (cotton balls, wetfire, & fatwood sticks)
7. countycomm led light
8. gerber evo jr. folding knife
9. whistle
10. bic lighter
11. can opener
12. alcohol wipes
13. $20 bill and $5 worth of singles
14. cr123a battery (for my fenix pd20 flashlight)

if i'm going hiking then i bring along another small container with more stuff such as 2 compasses (one for the pack, one in my pocket), another firesteel for my pocket, fishing hooks, more paracord, dmt dia-fold sharpener, signal mirror and a 6'x8' tarp. i can easily squeeze everything i need into this bag for an overnighter but for edc i can also squeeze it flat down to about 5" high when i pull on all the compression straps.

there's also a similar thread on the w&ss sub-forum: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=793516

Those are some good looking kits. I am suprised there isn't a gear/bag thread or sticky in the Becker Forum yet. Or maybe I have over looked it?

This isn't too fancy or high tech, But a medium Alice works great. Without the frame as a day pack, with the frame as a weekender. Use the frame and shelf as a gear/wood/meat hauler

And you can own one for less than $50.00

there's lots of such stickies and themes in the other forums :) seems like overkill to have that here too maybe? i dunno.

if someone starts one, like this one, we'll see how it does right? :)

thread evolution - fight!

Stickies can get out of control. W&SS, Busse, and ESEE have all resorted to Sticky consolidation because there were just too many. The Search function is your friend, and you'll have better luck on this topic in W&SS and G&G.

HI had zillionso f stickies, and well, there are other forums which are just maddening with a page of years old stale stickies.

my philosophy is that if the sticky is not a living breathing thing we must know about RIGHT NOW, it gets a pointer from a single meta sticky... thus the idea for the FAQ was born (not perfect, but hey, work in progress) as well as other linkies...

i'm probably going to create a "list of important Becker links" and place more things behind that. even six stickies makes me itch. 10? 15? 20? not on my watch ;) or not for long ;)

possibly too overkill for a day pack/hike, esp considering the nature of the subscription requires, but this kind of technology is VERY cool:
http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=102

a "where am i beacon", either always on, with updates, or whenever you need it... most ideal for long solo trips whether by motorcycle, bike, car, kayak... trekking alone is kinda silly sometimes, but you can't always bring a buddy and ... at least this way, someone can find the beacon ;) sell it on ebay. ;)

I agree with you guys on the overkill, some of the sub-forums have a first page almost of nothing but stickies. Im just trying to get some good ideas to revamp my pack as I plan on doing some more hiking and spending more time in the woods than I have been lately. I will use my google-fu and see what I can find.

for a search term, check out "bug out bag" or "survival bag" or ... once you find a few, finding more is easy. some of those are "more than complete". i've gear in my bag i've NEVER needed, and some i'm surprised i did need, to the point of adding it to more bags...

like? a usb to mini-usb connector. do you know how many devices that fits? for charging in particular? unreal. seems like you can always find a usb port ;) my main use, was for charging my GPS, but as it turns out, someone always needs one on a trip. i'm the goto guy for stuff like that ;)

Note that an easy way to search BFC is to use Google with the following string:

search terms site:www.bladeforums.com

Just replace "search terms" with ... well ... your search terms.

Also note that each subforum has a Search This Forum pulldown at the top. There are A LOT of daypack/kit threads in W&SS.

I'll try to do some pics of how I used to keep my day hike stuff set up, but lately all of my day hikes have been studies of one sort or another so...in the urban are I travel really light with minimal kit scattered through various pockets, and on wilderness hikes my gear has often been lightened down to the same set up or just a small shoulder bag because I am caught up in plant studies and I find getting into odd positions for good photos so much easier without a pack and get annoyed with taking it off and putting it back on over and over again. Sometimes I take a pack to a central location (off the trail) and cache the pack and go on a photo hike in the general area then go back after the pack, move on to another area and repeat.
