Hey guys,

I grew tired of sitting on my butt this spring break and watching all of you guys having fun out there, so I decided to go out on a day hike. I remembered that there is a county park just 10 minutes north of my new home so I grabbed my Camelbak Mule, knives, and a fishing pole and headed out. As soon as I got there I remembered that my fishing license hadn't been renewed so I drove in a circle to scout the area and went to the local wally world for my license.

The license turned out to be quite the adventure as the only associate in the area was working the paint counter as well. So a teacher and I stood at the gun counter and chatted a bit of the fish we hoped to catch that day (she was waiting for her license as her husband picked out tackle and food). Our wait turned out to be about 45 minutes but the company made time go by fast. Her husband would periodically stop by with his basket full of goodies and laugh at us for having to wait so long :p Once the license was purchased I raced back to the park trying to make up for lost time since I was attempting to get in a few hours before my wife got out of work.

Upon arrival, I picked a spot to leave my Expedition and walked my way out to a nice shady spot by the Nueces River in Hazel Bazemore Park.

Here's all of my gear that I took along, Camelbak Mule, tackle box, fishing pole:

This is the general area, it was sunny outside today, but with a nice cool breeze:

I knew I wouldn't be catching anything in this area, but it was peaceful enough to just drop a line in the water and be outside.

And here's a few EDC shots and my Mug:

Overall it was a nice day, I didn't really get to put my knives to use but I'll get to tomorrow as I'll be at the family ranch hopefully with a bar-b-que. If you guys have nothing to do, get outside - it's free and relaxing. Put some of that equipment to use. I had to dust my Camelbak off and would like to do a day hike at least once a week or so to feel more productive (by day hike I mean hike around for a few hours - not necessarily the whole day).

I hope you guys get to go out too, take care, J.

Hey, that looks like a really nice area! And I like the Gerber Big Rock - do you like it?

Yes sir, I actually picked it up at the local sporting goods store about a year ago I think. It was on clearance  so I took advantage of a good sale. It performs great and to me it's the perfect size fixed blade. Contrary to popular belief, the Big Rock holds an edge for a reasonable amount of time and is hair popping after a touch on the Lansky Turnbox. I've batoned with it before without any problems and like that it is inexpensive so I don't feel guilty about using it

The area is nice to hike around, but I didn't get a single nibble yesterday :o I'm more of a salt water fisherman and didn't have the proper tackle to begin with so that played a part in that as well :p

great stuff J... it's been a loooong time since i have been to TX... my Dad grew up there...:)

Great pics. I love all the outdoors shots that are starting to show up. Time for everyone to get out there!

Cool. Weather in the South is to where we don't have an excuse for not getting out. Sure beats screwing around on the internet:D

What fixed blade is that? Gerber....? I like the shape and material of those handles.
I got a fishing license, cheap rod/reel and some tackle just for an excuse to spend more time on the water before getting my kayak out the last couple of times last fall. Haven't fished in years, and didn't catch anything either time, but it was fun.
Thanks for the pic with the MULE, too. Got more stuff than I know what to do with, and still want to try one of those.

It was nice to get outside for a change :D

As for the fixed blade, it is a Gerber Big Rock. I really like the blade shape and thickness. It's a full tang and you can see that just by looking down at the spine and underside. Here's a side shot of it with my homemade leather sheath:

The Mule is very nice too. It was a gift from my mom about two years ago I believe  ....it's been a while :o For those of you out there who want a Camelbak but don't like the price, I found a pack at wally world just like my Mule (just in red/blue/green - not desert/camo/od) and it was half the price in the outdoor section. Just a thought, I think there was a wally world thread not too far back and that could have been in there :)
