Day hike in Texas

Hello everybody,

Today I made the most of the enjoyable "cool front" that we had which was a nice day of over cast and temps that felt around the 70's. I took several pictures and even a few videos, unfortunately the second half of my pics and videos were deleted accidentally when my significant other tried uploading pics for our upcoming wedding....

So, you guys get to see the initial parts of the day hike and two short videos of what I was doing and what I carried.

For some reason there was a lot of dead fish on the sides of the water bank, I don't know if there was a shortage in food, sudden temperature change, or whatnot, but there was a lot of dead stuff. The scenery was great though, all of the vegetation was green and hasn't been like that in half a year.

Since my next 3 videos were deleted, I won't be able to continue with that section. The next videos would have shown what was in my pack and what my EDC knife was. In the pack is/was my 5-in-1 cooking set, fire sticks, cotton balls, fishing kit, first aid kit, snake bite kit, compass, matches, flashlight, fork/spoon/knife utensils, metal cup (never used cup too), and a few other nick nacks.

I hiked out to this abandoned pier, made for a nice view of the water, I just wish the water was deeper.

Here's some local vegetation, just about everything in south Texas has stuff that will poke the shit out of you.

Here's some of these cactus fruits, I hear they are edible, just not sure how you would go abouts eating them

This also caught my eye, I'm not sure what it is, but I figured it was worth taking a shot of it.

I had several of the real greenery and animal tracks, but they were also deleted :grumpy: I had even made a fire, found a crab, and did a bit of light batoning. I hope you guys enjoyed the "trip." I'm planning on going out and doing something tomorrow evening and maybe even Sunday. I'll make sure the good stuff doesn't get deleted next time.

Take care, J.

J...to eat the cactus fruits I just cut them off with a knife and then skewer them. I then take out my nifty little Mora and scrape the spines away.

You can do the same thing with the actual plant. Once you remove the spines on what most people assume is a "leaf," you can fry them and it is damn good.

That is good to know especially since they are everywhere :D I'll try some out at my fiance's ranch this weekend....if I die from consumption I'll blame you :p
note to self: blame dougo83 if I don't make it to see Monday :foot:

naw prickly pear is edible, I'll vouch for him. Usually I'm careful to pinch the tip of the plant without any thorns around it, then saw through the fleshy stuff at the bottom, and basically fillet the shell off. Leaves you with juicy pulpy green guts that you can boil and they don't taste like much more than lettuce but are very edible. Lots of water and some vitamins, sugars too.

Hell, there is a surprising amount of plants you can eat down here in the Promised Land. I took a course on the native plants of Central Texas this summer. The final? Make a meal entirely out of the local flora.

Cool pics J thanks for sharing. Reminds me its almost hunting season. Now if I could only find a place to get me some venison this year.:grumpy:
My wife and mother inlaw love to eat nopalitos and the prickly pear.
