For the last month or so its been raining! Not so today.I started outside to do a couple chores fro the upcoming winter and snow.It was so Nice That I decided to go paddling instead.
Doesnt take me much time to get ready once the decision is made.
Packed a lunch and gone
Launching

Dragged around a fishing lure in the hopes of a fish lunch.Always pack a square of tinfoil an onion and a chunk of butter just in case the lunch I brought can be substituted with fish.
No such luck today.Chilly enough to have a fire.I had brought an Ukrainian sausage to grill

Finding dry wood after a month of rain can be done.Look how wet this is even when split
Oct2011013.jpg

I found a pretty dry cedar pole some 14 feet in length.Splitting it reminded me of a survival lesson I had learned when 1st trapping
Oct2011012.jpg

After splitting the pole I went and pulled some pine root.Using a stick and my hands.Root splits very easily and is learned fast. This root was split in 3's and heated in my tea kettle with hot water.

A noose tied and a notch cut in the end of the pole.Root lashing is tied to pole with a constrictor knot or clove hitch

And up a small pine.

The trick here is if the animal will not come to the snare, bring the snare to the animal. This will work really well with fish, grouse and, gophers squirrels any animal that will allow close approach.Slow and deliberate movements are made.
NOTE This is an illegal way to harvest and animal and usually against all game laws.Just like most figure 4 and deadfall sets.Knowing how and what to do may keep you around a few days.Good set skills to know
More to come

In this country beavers feed heavily on birch. The beach was scoured for beaver cuttings.Green birch will burn on an established fire and will burn down to beautiful coals

While waiting for thr fire to burn. The heart neck are pinned on a stick with the gizard.to feed to my pal

Excellent thread. Looks like a lovely canoe and nice tutorial on the pole snare. Love that last shot as well!

What was for lunch, grouse? Did you get it with the snare or did you shoot it?

Beautiful pics and great tutorial. Thanks for sharing. I like your fatwood pouch too. You keep it filled with just fatwood or do you have a bunch of tinder goodies in it?
