Hey guys...

Got a franklin Covey day planner for Christmas...

Pretty cool idea, just hard starting out. Any of you guys use these things?

That and, I'm looking for a smaller binder to keep the pages in. I dont like the huge binder it came with...

Any suggestions? I'm not much for PDA's, large fingers...

I have been using the Day Timer system for many years. Even though you have the Covey system, you may want to visit the Day Timer web site. They will probably have a binder there that should fit your needs.

If you have the big binder, you can exchange it for the smaller binder at no charge (at least last time I had reason to check). The 5x8 inch binder is certainly more convenient then the 8.5x11 version.

Myself, I just use a simple day planner these days.

I used to use the Franklin system. Makes a lot of sense. But I have to tell you that the Palm system is s heck of a lot easier to use and much more portable. I still know people who think best with a real pen in hand though. good luch

Try www.franklincovey.com to see what your options are.

Been a six ring man for more than 10 years now. I tried switching to a palm a couple of years ago then went back. I've had a folifax (the original organiser) and a day runner but the best binder I've had is a hand made one I picked up in the markets in Vietnam (Saigon). It's made of thick leather and just seems to be un breakable. I think it cost me $2. I usually buy Filofax refills. Once in a while I'll print out my contacts list from outlook (on my PC) onto some blank refills to I have an up to date phone list in the binder.

I've been a Franklin user for 15 years and feel lost without it. I have tried the to keep everything on my Palm, but the key information just seemed to get lost with such limited visability. I like to be able to track my "to do's" and appointments all on one page.
I have carried the traditional, compact and the pocket. I have to say the pocket is my favorite. Small enough to carry with you everywhere, yet large enough for practical use. They also used to make a "satellite" system that basically allowed you to carry blank pages about the size of a checkbook that would clip right into the planner itself. Made it nice when I used the larger planner and didn't always have it with me.
Lastly, it does take a bit to get used to the system but if you strictly follow the process for the 1st 30 days, you will be hooked. After that you will have a good understanding of the principles and can modify to fit your specific needs. Good luck.

Thanks for the pointers...

I can see how useful the day by day list can be, but I havent gotten into the groove of getting tomorrows schedule down before tomorrow turns into today! :D

I'll check and see if they still exchange binders!

I had the same problem at first, but now I just end my day by flipping over to the next day and filling it in. Helps me start the next day running.

I have one of the small zip up type faux leather day planners that I've been carrying for awhile. I like it and it gets the most use as my checkbook/ATM register and also for visiting clients and taking notes on prospective jobs before giving an estimate. I have room for business cards and a couple of pens but I really try to keep it minimal.

I go through this every so often. I'll hit the Staples store and start browsing day planners and the next thing you know I have a new one. Always seeking the perfect one but right now I'm pretty happy with the current system.

I recently acquired a Blackberry 7100t. Awesome device! It is really completing my information needs. :)

I'm like RTAK....I have been using the Franklin planner since 1989....

My first one was the Monarch size.

My second was the Classic.

Third...the compact.....see a pattern?

You got it...for the last 6-7 years I have been using the Pocket size.

I'm just not that important of a person.....:o :p

Don't have much to say or write down...but if I go a day without...I feel completely lost! (or on vacation.....:o)

Can you go to their website and find a pic of the binder you have? If you already have the Master Starter Kit for a specific size, then you need to stay within that "family". But we can help you find something a little more portable.

If you got one of those large leather Monarch cases....they have great resale value. :D

I literally keep everything in my planner. I have all my wallet stuff...checks, license, cc's, cash, receipts, photos as well as the planner pages, etc.

It took a while for me to figure out how best to use my planner....I've read all the franklin planning stuff and much of it is too much for me...over the top.

But the formatting fits my thinking very well.

Ask any question....we'll get ya going right.

I use the Classic size every week day at work, I went to the Course and have never looked back.

If you watch on Ebay you can find great Binders in most all sizes (most are slightly used) so switching would be simple.

Enjoy.

It appears to be a Legacy Nappa in monarch size...

Its a big binder. But, it has a spot for a cell phone/PDA, neither of which I have...

I used a Day Timer for several years. My company sent me to a class about it. I found it to be a very helpful system that did improve my time management and increase my effectiveness. One of the keys to such a system is to throw away the other calendars and places you take notes and record things. Then everything is in one place. However, if you leave your planner in the cart at Safeway you're screwed.

Several years ago I switched to a PDA/cell phone that can be synched with my computer. I rarely enter things directly into the PDA. Ususally I enter them into the computer and then synch. But I can enter into the PDA if I need to enter an apointment or such. One advantage of this is if I lose the PDA the information is backed up on my computer. I suplement the PDA with 3x5 cards and a pen in a little leather case. If I need to take notes in a meeting or write someone a note I use the 3x5 cards.

Do you have the Starter pages yet?

and...do you want to keep that size?

This it?

Looks like its about the same size...

Mine has on the left hand side a sliding PDA clip and an elastic Cell phone holder. On the right hand side it has a zipper pouch... along with all the credit card holders etc.

I think I saw the package at Costco... I'll have to double check!

I'm probably going to investigate sizing down to something smaller... mainly the binder.

It came with a HUGE stack of papers. The first page says "Original" and has a spot to put your name/adress in case its lost...

Also has January-December tabs... and the plastic weekly compass. Plus a bunch of Goal/Financial papers. And an adress book.

Dont know if I'm missing any of the rest of the "System" but its a good bit to wrap my brain around!

I'm thinking about picking up a backpack (probably an alice pack or a maxpedition that you guys love so much!) if I intend to carry the thing everywhere. Its big enough that I'd set it down every moment, but a smaller object is easier to lose than a big one once set down. Binder in a bag vs just a binder... slant the odds in my favor.

:D

Go for just the binder to start. Go as light as possible. You can always add the bag later if you need it.

hate to say it....but any chance at a return or exchange?

that binder's pretty expensive...

My pocket sized binder is similar to yours in design, but only cost $50, and the refills are around $30.

If you have to keep it.....there are ways of making it feel better....add stuff to it...I know, sounds ridiculous...but the more you have in there, the less you have to carry around. Then it will feel small compared to the backpack you used to carry...:footinmou

I always wanted a Leather Monarch binder as a young man....talking about it brings back the memories....but I was more lustful...I wanted the briefcase kind - with handles & such....if they made a pocket version of that I'd be all over it...

Ok...enough about me...

:p

where you goin' with this thing?
