Was a beautiful day on Saturday, so I grabbed my two fishing buddies and headed out to a local pothole lake. Took along the kiddo's 14 for use for the day.
Start of the trail:

The leaves are changing in full force here, so it make for a nice hike in:

After a short hike in, we found a spot to set up:

Fishing was pretty slow in the morning, so I taught my daughter the finer points of gathering wood in the forest. I let her break up the wood for kindling, and showed her how to push cut around the larger branches she couldn't break by hand. Then we set up the stove for some brunch:
Processing the wood:

Piles of birch bark, kindling, and larger sticks ready to go:

So I set up my ghetto twig stove and let her start it with a cotton pad and a firesteel (I even got the "I can DO this Daaaad" when I tried to help her lol) :

Success!

First burn with my Stanley kit:

Lunch was instant noodles and some chinese sausage (cut up by the 14 of course):

Made some hot chocolate afterwards:

Right after lunch, the fishing picked up:

My contribution to the day (had to zoom in to see it lol):

Caught and released 5 fish, and lost probably a half dozen more. Em had fun, and sure loved having to tend over the stove. She's getting more and more confident with the blade on every outing. The 14 is a perfect knife for her small hands right now, and I love that she'll be able to get even more and more use out of it as she gets older. Now that it looks like I've "officially" lost it to her for good, I have no choice but to pick another one up for myself soon.
Was a nice day to get out while we still could; before the snow starts flying. Thanks for looking.
