Was a beautiful day on Saturday, so I grabbed my two fishing buddies and headed out to a local pothole lake. Took along the kiddo's 14 for use for the day.

Start of the trail:

The leaves are changing in full force here, so it make for a nice hike in:

After a short hike in, we found a spot to set up:

Fishing was pretty slow in the morning, so I taught my daughter the finer points of gathering wood in the forest. I let her break up the wood for kindling, and showed her how to push cut around the larger branches she couldn't break by hand. Then we set up the stove for some brunch:

Processing the wood:

Piles of birch bark, kindling, and larger sticks ready to go:

So I set up my ghetto twig stove and let her start it with a cotton pad and a firesteel (I even got the "I can DO this Daaaad" when I tried to help her lol) :

Success!

First burn with my Stanley kit:

Lunch was instant noodles and some chinese sausage (cut up by the 14 of course):

Made some hot chocolate afterwards:

Right after lunch, the fishing picked up:

My contribution to the day (had to zoom in to see it lol):

Caught and released 5 fish, and lost probably a half dozen more. Em had fun, and sure loved having to tend over the stove. She's getting more and more confident with the blade on every outing. The 14 is a perfect knife for her small hands right now, and I love that she'll be able to get even more and more use out of it as she gets older. Now that it looks like I've "officially" lost it to her for good, I have no choice but to pick another one up for myself soon. ;) Was a nice day to get out while we still could; before the snow starts flying. Thanks for looking.

How sweet, your fish matches your shirt! Lol

Looks like a great day. Teaching her a good skill set and knife etiquette will work out well for her in the long run. Good on you.

Looks like a great time man. Makes me wanna go fishing.

Absolutely nothing better than sharing the outdoors with your kids, especially at an early age. Relatively easy lessons to learn now but they'll last her a lifetime. Well done and thanks so much for sharing the photos.

Awesome !! It's great seeing that you can get out and spend some time in the outdoors with your daughter. Too many kids sitting at home playing video games or on Facebook anymore.

I love my Stanley cup/pot setup. I picked it up two weeks ago. Makes two perfects ups of coffee for the green cups supplied.

Thanks for sharing your adventure.

Thanks for sharing your outing with your daughter. Some great pics! She looks like she had a blast.
I have two girls that I can't get out nearly as much as I would like, at least for the woodsy stuff (they sure love the beach, tho - and "bonfires"). At least they are going with me to the NE Gathering next month and are pretty psyched it seems. Hope the enthusiasm is still there after the first night sleeping in 20°F temps....

Looks like a great time!
Thanks for the pics.
I always have a blast when I go fisshing with my girl.
Good times!!
Nice to see her loving that 14!

Glad you all enjoyed the pics. My daughter is usually pretty "girly" most of the time, but for some reason she does love fishing. We don't get out as often as we should though...and right now she's a sponge for information, so I try and teach her at least one thing from my limited knowledge when we are out.

Giz-yeah I'm liking the Stanley pot as well. Perfect size for an afternoon outing.

GSOM-from what I've read and seen in previous threads, I'm sure they'll have a blast at the next gathering. Kids are pretty resilient, and at least there seems to always be a fire going to warm up by lol.

What a great post!

I got my 7 year old boy out for the first time camping this year and I vow to do much more outdoorsy stuff with him going forward.

He, Hee, Heee!!! She fished you right under the table pops! :D

"I can DO this Daaaad"

Great post. :peach:
