I did a search and found an old thread on daypacks, but it was pretty short. And I have seen several threads on full-size packs, but I thought I would bring it up again.

I am looking for a larger daypack, probably close to 3000 cu. in for dayhiking and for my trip to Scotland this December (to be a carry-on when on airplanes). The one I found that I like most is the Kelty Large Redwing, which is 2900 cubic inches. Sierra Trading Post had them for $70, but are out of stock (they have the smaller 2400 cu. in model for the same price). These have a good waist belt and internal frame.

Anyone have a Kelty Redwing? OR another pretty large daypack that they are very fond of? My budget is $100 (the cost of the Kelty if I get it somewhere other than Sierra Trading Post).

Check out the Outback Pack from LL Bean.com
They come in two sizes. The large is 3800 cu. in. (not sure about the small) price for the large is $139. Neat thing about the Outback Pack is that the shoulder and waist straps tuck into their own pocket and zip shut. Perfect for airline travel. Those luggage movers are hard on backpack straps.

LL Bean is first rate. Can't beat their quality and service.

Good Luck and happy hiking !!

Thanks, Shep. I will check that out.

Quest, our local sporting goods store, is having a big sale this weekend, so I am going to go see what they have.

CD, take a look at the packs from Lowe Alpine, they are rugged, comfortable, and you can strap on them just about anything you can think of.

Hey Clay,
You might want to check out the Camelback TransAlp (their biggest pack). It's got a hydration system like lots of newer packs, but beyond that it's a great pack. Camelback is mostly known for cycling hydration packs, but that model has been well recieved outside of the cycling community as well.
I also have tried Kelty, and I would recommend them as a decent pack as well. Funny thing though, my Camelback and my (newer) Kelty are almost exactly the same size, both have hydration systems, and are very similar in layout. Somehow, I always find my Camelback to be more convenient. It may just be that I've had that pack longer, and so I'm used to it, and stuffing crap into it, but for what it's worth, I prefer that to my Kelty.

Well, I found one I liked at that warehouse sale: a Marmot Glissade. It is last years model and 3000 cu. in with a removeable daypack, water bottle holders, and a few things I will never use for their inteded purpose (ski holder, shovel holder, ice ax holder). You can see this years model here:

http://www.marmot.com/products/packs/packs_prod_bkpk_glissade.html

I may yet get another daypack (probably in the 2500 cu in range) at some point for hiking with my fiance, who doesn't have a pack. This pack fits her relatively well, though. We are close enough in height that a daypack that fits one of usually fits the other, though a full bakpacking type pack, I would rather she had one designed for a woman.

Thanks for all your replies!

Have you ever tried WWW.SPORTSMANSGUIDE.COM?

They always have brand name packs for good prices.

Clay if you are interested in a Blackhawk Phoenix pack in OD , I have a brand new one I will take $110 for shipped . Thanks , Mike...

Mike -- Thanks, but it will probably be a while till I buy another pack.

Execution Style -- Yes, I do buy a decent amount of stuff from the Sportsmans Guide. There are good deals to be had but they jam you on shipping, so it is best to order in quantity.
