Daytona Pepsi 400

A lot of nervous racing last night. ;) :) Nadir was Mark Martin getting creamed. Stewart led more laps than any other driver in the track's history but the most important lap hit gold for him . Junior really improved his position & was man enough to admit Tony was unbeatable,no excuses, just the truth. This old geezer hit the record button after an hour & watched the finish early this morning. The local Daytona-Beach News Urinal finally gave up & went to press so we'll get all the local color stuff tomorrow. Thank God for a safe race!

would someone please,PLEASE keep Fox the whole season?? i'm not a fanatic but on Nbc i hear"jeff gordon's loose" on Fox i hear "jeff gordons loose cause their's not enough downforce to hold him there then larry mac explains spring rubbers and air pressure and Hammond actually shows me an average fan where spring rubbers look like and how they work. and yes im looking forward to the fall race out at Talladega if Nascar would just use those restrictor plates for doorstops....i count myself lucky to be old enough to remember that "Talladega train" and when a strong car could actually pull out of line and pass someone without having help.and i don't remember too many 27 car wrecks back in those days either

Outstanding race!
Was somewhat dissappointed with Martin wrecking early as he is my favorite for this years Cup.
However, I was extremely happy to see Smoke totally dominate the race and serve notice to Hendrick, Roush and DEI they are not the only game in town.
Some folks may say it was a boring race, but Stewarts dominance dictated such. There was lots of great racing from second on back...as Daytona is known to produce even with the restrictor plates. It probably wasn't evident on TV, but spend a few bucks and attend the race and you will see what it was/is all about.
Didn't make it to where I was staying until almost 4AM and the 4+ hour drive home on Sunday was a bear, but the time spent with good friends and good racing at 190 mph was worth it.

Daverageguy,

Can't comment on the coverage difference as I attended live and in person.
As far as the restrictor plates are concerned...well, it's been 15+ years or so now and as much as most folks dislike them, I don't think it's going to change any time soon. I've decided to get over it and enjoy the racing for what it is...and the fact that it represents only 4/36 of the overall races. The other 32 are damn good as well!

I agree. NBC, and Wally 'DUMBASS' Dallenbach suck. I do like Weber, Parsons, and Bestwick, but their production blows chunks.

by "Baumshelter" on his way home for brunch with Uncle Alan & his tolerant [of Uncle Alan ] wife & we bench raced a bit ,commenting on how fast those cars do go.We had an enjoyable visit & are planning to visit the nearby dirt track at Barberville Florida. Dirt tracks are scarce as hen's teeth but racing actually began on the beach .
This old fellow is trying hard to adjust to this modern,slick,big-bucks racing 'cause it ain't a'changing.

Anybody watch race?Tony Stewart,McMurray,JR.1,2,3.I believe FullerH usually stars these threads.Dunno'.
I was watching the French Grand Prix instead. Michael Schumacher's Ferrari was 3rd to Fernando Alonso's Renault in 1st and to Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren-Mercedes in 2nd.

FullerH,Sorry.Guess I knew you kinda dug Formula 1 more than NASCAR was just anxious to get Daytona thread started.Have a friend who hasn't missed more than a couple of INDY's since early 80's.His brother gets free tickets and the third brother usually hooks up too. They're once a year get together. Not July 4th or Thanksgiving,Christmas or New Years Eve just INDY's.They went to the Michelin fiasco in the not too distant past also.

I used to follow NASCAR when they would go out to Riverside and run. Dan Gurney usually won. Jimmy Clark once ran a NASCAR stocker at, I think, Daytona in the mid-'60s. That is where he met Miss Hurst Golden Shifter, Linda Vaughn, the subject of many a young car fan's wet dreams, and apparently had a sort of an affair with her. She was quite foond of him.

It is a bloody shame that contracts, etc., keep the current F-1 aces from competing in any other kinds of auto racing. I would LOVE to see Michael Shumacher in a World Rally Championship car in the ice and snow or in a stocker on a real road course such as Watkins Glen.

Yep,
I was the honored guest at Uncle Allens house on Sunday. Mrs. Uncle Allen aka. Virginia cooked so may waffles I thought I'd burst. It was truly a pleasurable visit and a testament to the uncanny bond internet conversations may form.

Lived in Eastern N C & the nearest track was about 2 hours away in Myrtle Beach,S C & we just had a micro-midget track at home. Using horizontal-shaft lawnmowers they put on quite a show. There was a horsepower limit & competition was fairly even . Pete Peterson, a local, had been banged up at Myrtle & his wife put the big HALT to his racing. He found she had no objection to micros & he came into the parts store I was at [using Va's veterans OJT program]. We decided shaving the engine head would give him an edge. We did it & he started dominating the races. Soon others discovered the secret & the field was pretty level again. One of us remembered the quote" gotta' let 'em breathe". I spent considerable time searching for larger valves & discovered that Pontiac valves would fit in the seats if they were widened & the port angle changed. Stem size was no problem. A drill press handled that but we had to shorten the stems & mill new keeper grooves.
Folks, he had to race at about 3/4 throttle or start lapping cars after 3 or 4 laps. Then the 2 cycle chainsaw engines appeared. It took a year or two before they caught up due to clutch & gearing problems. . Old Pete had to run full out then. Everyone had been yelling he was illegal & one day his engine detonated. He jumped off & yelled,"okay , dammit you called me illegal & now you can check me out. I've even tore it down for you ! "

Shades of small-town Smokey Yunick ?

Uncle Alan :D ;)
