Since you are the famed maker of your awesome line, I really value your opinion. I read you say that tip down carry is a 'sin'. lol. I was curious why you were so against it. Thanks!

Needless to say I am not Daywalker and I have no desire to speak for him but I would guess it has something to do with deployment speed. Tip up is much faster to deploy from a pocket and requires less repositioning of the hand before it is in a useful grip. Additionally it keeps the blade against the pocket seam so it won't open on it's own and bite you.

Just my .02 cents.

My 2 cents believes that to be a myth. Each direction requires hand repositioning. With practice either can be deployed equally well. Most folks have a preference of one over the other and usually that preference has to do with which direction their first quality clipped folder pointed.

My 10 cents says your 2 cents could be an urban legend...but I have not checked it out with snoops yet...since my 10 cents holds 5 times the value of your 2 cents...I say let the man (chad los banos) himself answer his own questions...he was the one who said it was a sin in the first place....me I think it's plain blasphemy.....Doc:p

Aloha minimize,

Sorry so late in answering your question, and I am FAR from famous.

Anyway, Gespenst got it about right. For ME, tip up does require less repositioning and just feels more natural. Now, many moons ago, a tip down BM Stryker got hung up while placing it back in RFP and all I saw was something "shiny" coming THROUGH my pocket! Also, I don't like cramming a tip down close to my centerline on my pocket to prevent accidental um...well..you know.

However, zenheretic is also correct in that it really is a matter of, "to each his own". And I gotta say that Dr. Snubnose is also correct...man, I missed the verbal kumite between these two!!!:p

God bless and thanks for having my back guys!!!

Tip up for me as well. I know that some folks do not prefer the tip up position because they have known people or maybe themselves, have cut their hands dipping into their pockets.
But I've heard on more than one occasion of a person cutting their own leg with their knife situated in a tip down position. The knife had partially opened when the knife was clipped into the pocket, and when they sat down, the knife had cut into their leg. Deadly close to the femoral artery on one of the incidents I may add.
But it's a never ending debate. Those who prefer tip up will always carry it that way, and the same goes for those who prefer tip down.
Always carry a knife and stay safe.

My 20 cents say you all make good points. In general i prefer tip up.

I thought tip down was blasphemetic till i got this belly fin shark from Chad. As this flipper/subhilt is a bit larger as usual this one actually carries better tip down in my preference. So it depends on the style of knife.

However more important then tip up our down is a GOOD DETENT on a knife.
If i feel the urge to hop arround like a kangaroo run arround the block or jump on a trampoline with my knife clipped in pocket i want to be sure the blade stays locked when clipped; either tip down or up!

;)

Gotcha. Thanks. I was curious why you thought so cause I have seen you post it on more than one occasion. I have had a tip up carry open on me when I ran... hence my apprehension.

Not famous?? I have been waiting for your wife to post a regular Trance on the bay so I could snatch it up.. and hopefully have you tag it with your autograph. :D Pretty famous to me.

That actually makes a lot of sense to me too... thanks for your insight.

UP :D. I was reading I believe the TK issue with the M-Type and Hyper review that this will probably be one of the never ending debates. One could argue that with enough practice you could get it out and open quickly carrying it down. It all depends on the individual like others have mentioned. People at work ask me which gun I think they should buy. I always tell them go to a shop and ask to hold several guns and find what feels the most comfortable to them. What may feel comfortable and shoot well in MY hand could be the complete opposite for someone else. See what works best for you go with that .

Due to the large thumb studs on some of Chad's designs (like the Trance), I can use that feature to catch on the seam of the pocket and open the blade as I remove the knife which requires no repositioning of the hand. This only works in tip up. Otherwise I do agree with you, in some cases tip down is just as effective it just depends on what you are used to.

I actually like tip down a whole lot more than tip up. I carry in my rear right pocket, so tip down keeps the spine of the knife against the seam of my pocket. I can also get it into my hand faster, I just pinch the knife at the pivot and pull up, and rotate the handle into my palm.
