I recently got this Torrent framelock flipper in and have had the pleasure of carrying and using it for the last couple of weeks or so. This is the first knife that I have ever received directly from Derek, and to say the least, I am overwhelmingly pleased with it. Due in part to my own indecision, I waited 2 full years for this one, but it is really worth every minute of the wait.
This particular piece is different from Derek's past work in a few ways. First, it is the first knife that he has ever made with Stellite 6K, which is my favorite blade material. 6K is known, along with its ability to take a killer edge and its high wear and corrosion resistance, for its inherent lubricity, so like my 6K flipper by Jim Smyth, the action is extra smooth on this one. And combined with Derek's strong detent, the 6K blade helps make this particular piece flip on the same level as the best work of JL Williams, Tim Galyean, and Phil Boguszewski.
I also wanted a deep carry clip on this Torrent, and Derek was kind enough to design one to put on this piece for me. As you can see from the pics, he did an outstanding job with the clip, and the knife rides even deeper in my pocket than I was expecting.
Finally, Derek was kind enough to put some filework on the backspacer of this piece at my request. The filework helps this particular Torrent stand out even more.
And, of course, like his other pieces, Derek's work is impeccable on this flipper. Fit and finish is near perfect, and the knife is built like a tank. With a 3 5/8" blade and an 8" OAL, I find this Torrent to be a really great size for carrying around everywhere I go.
For those of you interested in getting a knife from Derek, he is one of the few tactical/utility makers in high demand who still takes orders. His wait time is about 3 to 3 1/2 years now, so it might be a good time to get on his list before it gets even longer or in case he stops taking orders in the future. Go to www.dbfraleyknives.com for more information on how to contact him.
Special thanks to Derek for making this one just the way I wanted it!
