If you have the time, Old Rag Mountain is about two hours away from DC in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Old Rag offers one of the best hikes on the east coast and the views are incredible. If you hike the complete trail it will take about 5-6 fairly intense hours but it is well worth it.
A very cool place a little closer to DC is Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria. This is about 20 minutes outside of DC and is the largest park in Fairfax County. It is basically a swamp (or for the p.c. crowd, wetlands)with a nice board walk winding through it (elevated about 1 foot above the water). Lots of wildlife in this multi-hundred acre oasis within our very densely populated metro area.
I work for the Fairfax County Park Authority so contact me if you want any more info. of the area.
If you are thinking of taking an assignment there.... better talk to those who went before you... Gary Herman retired into another govt job there... Do you know him?
Although I left the area about twenty years ago, I have fond memories of hiking, and camping along the C&O Canal in the Paw Paw West Virginia area, as well as West of the the Blue Ridge in the George Washington National Forest. Beautiful country.
