Picked up on flyer at my steel supplier on this stuff the other day thought you guy's might be interested, supposedly put's D-2 in the grave. Here's a sight were you can check out the spec's on it www.alro.com.I'll be getting some in the near future to try on tomahawk's,doubt very seriously it'll be as tough as S-7

S-7 is horribly tough, great steel for a chopping knife, or a high end machete.

I will be getting a length of it. I happened to fall across its characteristics when I was going through one of my material handbooks. Check this out. Goodbye D2!

http://www.alro.com/DATAPdfs/DC53-2.pdf

Cant wait to try it out. Looks perfect for blades of any length up to 12". Beyond that, any heavy chopping will be best suited to S7, such as axes or kukris.
7.00 bucks a pound.

Weird data sheet. Nothing on chemistry - nothing on corrosion resistance... I wonder how different this from - say CPM D2?

Sounds like it's a lot cheaper.

Rob!

I asked about this steel a while back and if I remember right it was suggested that it wasn't quite right for knives. Any how I will let you guys decide that because I have no idea:o
Designation Chemical composition (Wt%)
DF-38 C: 0.20/0.50, Si:<3.0, Mn:<3.0
(JIS Z3251) Cr: 3.0/9.0, Mo:<2.5, P,S:<0.03

Taken from this PDF

Correction: they said it would make a good knife:o here's the link to my thread on it only 2 responses though

Sure looks interesting. Let us know how it works for you, Arakiel.

The carbon and carbide formers go hand an hand. Otherwise, 150 points of carbon without something to eat it all would be "cast iron"...

DC53 sounds interesting.

C .95 Mo 2.00 Cr 8.00 V 0.25 sounds a lot like A2 with a D2 flavor to me.

Looks fantastic on paper, a bit like 3v, but with less vanadium. Super tough AND very wear resistant. Cool, I hope it catches on and becomes more available.

I finally got around to obtaining some of it. I bought a 1/2" by 12" by 24" plate. Trying to figure out the best way to use it. Forging isnt a viable option for me at this time, so I need to get it into useable lengths and widths, hopefully without too much loss. I'll start playing with it soon, so I'll let you guys know how it goes shortly.
