Just got my DDR small Apogee, and this is the perfect knife for me. This really is the knife I have been looking for since I started buying knives.

The only knife that might be better for me is possibly the large Apogee, but then again, maybe not.

Just perfect....

Gotta agree with you there, Mike. The Apogee is a fine knife. I'm lucky enough to have one with a Norris damascus blade and it still dazzles me.

I have had it for about 1 1/2 years, and an awesome knife. I carry it instead of my large CR Sebenza(along with my small Sebenza, and Umfaan), and the thing about it is although the handle is long, it is thin, and not bulky. In fact the one I have is the one that was in an issue of Blade magazine I believe May of 2000, but not sure. The only thing I was not into was the anodized color, but that is just me. I took Flitz to the handle, and made it like natural color. That way it does not stick out in public so much. Anyway with that 420V steel it is awesomely sharp, and holds an edge well. The other thing I did is changed the profile of the blade, and give it a thinner edge, and is even more scary sharp. Feels good in the hand, and in the pocket for a large knife.
Even if I wanted the anodization back, Darrel told me for $20-$25 he would redo it, and even refurbish it, but I got it as a user, and a good one it has been.He is a great man to deal with, and willing to do what it takes to make you happy.
It is one of my favorites, and though I rotate my knives, the Apogee is always in my pocket.
You picked a good one, and hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. :D

It was a while back and it is all Dexters fault :D. Dex had one of the first ones (I think it was '99 Blade Show) and showed it to me. The knife blew me away.

Ended up ordering one and showing it to Dad (almost had to beat him to get it back). Told him I would get one for him. He asked if Darrel made a smaller one.

This is a pic after the big one was sent to Darrel for a refurbish and before I gave the small one to Dad.

Oh good lord, that is an awesome pic! I was hoping to find a pic showing the small and large, for comparison, and that is just perfect.

That nuggeting really grabs me....very nice.

I know for sure I need a large now.

I have been in the habit of saying it is the best folding knife you can buy...and then he went and quit making them!

Well, as long as we're showing off...;)

I can't think of too many things that get me as excited as Apogees! I've had six of them in the past two years and sold three of them only so that I could buy the three I've kept. They are such fantastic knives...they carry very well and they are less imposing when you use them in front of folks than other knives of the same size. I remember on Darrel's old site he referred to them as "sleepers" and that's just what they are. Too cool.

Yup,it's a great folder with great style.I only have the one but it's one of my favorites. It ranks up there with the Mod.4, ATCF and the TNT for being a style you can really recognize the maker from.

Can anyone tell me where to find one? Thanks.

Les Robertson has a couple on his site and 2thehilt.com has a medium as well. They pop up in the on this forum pretty often too.

Another excellent pic! That one from Blues is really nice, but the blade looks to be somewhat different...is there no recurve on that one?

Here is a question:

How can you tell what blade steel a particular Apogee has?

Mike,

The blade does have a recurve though the first pic doesn't really show it. This pic gives a slightly better perspective. (Sorry I don't have the opportunity at the moment to take it out and fiddle around for a better angle.)

I have to agree, a great knife from Darrel. Especially the 4.25" I asked him about discontinuing it, he said the knife had evolved as far as he could take it. He is moving on to other designs. The EDC and Maxx are just what you currently see. He has some surprises coming very soon! You will like where he is headed!

Sometimes Darrel is too easy to work with! Bastid! He keeps figuring out ways to take my money!
