DDR Apogee or small Sebenza?

I already have a small classic Sebenza which I like very much, but I am currently saving for a new knife and I was just wondering which to get between a new unique graphic small Sebbie or a 3 inch Apogee? I am going to carry which ever one of these two that I end up with so could you guys that have some DDR knives tell me if they are as good as the Sebenza. I mean no disrespect to DDR knives at all I have just never seen any of his work in real life, I can only go by what good things that I have read on here. Thanks guys.:)

Being that you have a small seb already, with the unique graphic you pretty much know what you're getting.

Darrel has a variety of blade and handle finishes. Make sure you know, or even better, specify what kind of finish you want if you get one of his knives. Many people were happy with his "Sure Grip" finish, but I was not...my fault for not asking what kind of finish to expect.

Duplication of effort is bad ! Or so I'm told. . .and believe periodically.

So, with that rule in mind. . .a DDR is a definite must ! Of course, even if you weren't in possession of a small Classic ~ I'd still recommend possessing one of DDR's works !

The question now. . .what add-on's for the new addition?

I'm glad you asked. . .

#1. Stick with the CPM-420V blade !

#2. OK. . .if you must. . .upgrade to the Stellite 6k

#2. Must have carbon fiber scales (non-slotted) !

That's it. Plain and simple. . .

Good luck and post picks when you get it ! :D

I have been very happy with the quality of all the knives I have gotten from Darrel.

Thanks for your comments on the sure grip finish.
I dont put it on knives unless asked at this time.

Now all the knives come with a standard finish (satin then ceramic peened). This give a good grip also.

The Apogee is the first custom I have ever owned, and I love it. It gets carried every day, and that 420v is very user friendly.
Thanks for making such great knive Darrel

The Apogee. It will be just as smooth as the Sebby, but more comfortable to carry and use, and of course much prettier. CPM420V rules for a small folder blade. BG42 is just stainless steel in comparison.

I handled an agpogee at the PKA show. I was not impressed AT ALL. Too small, too hard to work, too expensive. Put it down quick.

Met a guy there with a DDR EDC, which I LOVED. Now THAT is a great knife.

As an aside, I just can't say enough about my medium TnT. Great knife for EDC as well, although I'd probably order a different blade shape than mine if I could stand the wait. Maybe for my next one. :-)

You might find yourself considering getting rid of the Sebbie after trying a DDR or Mayo. I know I sure am.

Tough question since Anne, Chris and Darrel are friends.

I own and use and enjoy both.

As far a the size. My apogee is about two inches longer closed than my small Sebenza.

Apogee takes the cake on this comparison hands down IMO. It is fair to compare a sebie to some custom knives, but it is not fair to compare them to some of the finer custom knives out there. I include TNTs Carsons and Apogees in that finer category (there are many others too).

Man. . .just thinkin' about Mayo's, DDR's, Carson's and Sebbies get the heart a racin' ! :D What a fine bunch ! !

Have em both - Like em both - You Gotta Get em both!

Not a fair comparison, IMO, especially since a unique graphic is right up there with the Apogee in price.
As others have already said, the Apogee has the upper hand in ergonomics, blade steel, blade shape (if you prefer a recurve, which I do, personally), looks, and options.
Check out the EDC, too, if you get the chance.

I own both an Apogee and a large Sebbie. If you add on $100 - $150 on top of the price you can get a Sebbie, you can go full blown custom. The Apogee definitely has the edge in terms of performance and especially aesthetics. Nothing much I can say....you guys have it pretty much covered!

Thanks for all of your replies. I really like the EDC also. Is the EDC a better knife than the Apogee? I mean in terms of everyday use. Now I know that is the name of the EDC but is there anyone one here who thinks that the EDC is the knife I should get instead of the Apogee? I mean I know both of them are super knives just which one do all of you like better? Thanks again.

The EDC is my EDC now :) I do like the EDC a little better than the Apogee. If you need a heavy duty field/work knife, the 4" one is a great user. For field use I'd go with the Dominator blade style (drop point blade, recurve). It's a great slicer. Darrel uses a slack belt with a 14" contact wheel to put on a nice, deep hollow grind that leaves the edge quite thin for a blade this size, but man, does it cut! I'm beginning to like this grind better than a full flat grind.

The EDC's handle offers more bulk than the Apogee. If thinness is what you are after, the Apogee's thin handle will make it carry very easy without printing. The EDC (both sizes...) fill my hand better than the Apogee.

EDC or Apogee - with either one you can't go wrong.

Definitely the EDC !

I got the fighter style CPM-420V blade, carbon fiber (no slots) scales, and the heavy duty liners (.75 SS). It's accented with heat colored screws, clip and liners. . . And wicked sharp ! ! ! :D

John, check your hotmail. Sent you my phone #.
Got an Apogee (3.9"), and CF EDC (3.6") if you want to compare them. My EDC is a liner lock with carbon fiber scales, and it is my favorite knife. Best ergonomics I've seen, folder or fixed.

I would say go for the Apogee. I have a small one in 420V and it is great. It's a thinner knife and a pretty one at that. I'm waiting on an Apogee small in Talonite and it should be a real winner. CRK knives are great and I love the woodies. The Apogee shows no wear, the decorated scrathches easily. The Apogee sits deep in the pocket and is great when you want something that does not scream, "I have a knife!" Go for the DDR! But either way you can't go wrong.

This will be my first custom knife and I know that I want one with a 3 inch blade. I'm not a real big fan of the big folders, I like the smaller ones. Can you get an EDC with a 3 inch blade? Thanks again for all of you guys help.
