Here's my latest...One of the new DDRIII kits from Darrel Ralph.

Giraffe scales.
Heavily fileworked backspine and blade (blade is hand-rubbed)
Carved 416ss side spacers sandwiched between brass shims (brass didn't show well in pics)
Thumbstud has inlaid citrine and then shaped and polished on drill press.
Fileworked screws.
I used especially nice Eggerling damascus for bolsters.

Hope you enjoy...

Your 'carving' is without a doubt some of the nicest around! Hell of a 'kit knife'!!!!!!!!!

That is just absolutely outstanding work!!!

Gorgeous.............

What a beautiful knife Dennis. It's the kind of knife you can feel without actually holding it. I know you put a lot of yourself in this one and it shows. Great piece of art, Dave

Thanks guys...

Always means a lot to hear encouraging words...

Especially from those who are in the know! :D

One of these days I'll finish making the jump to sole authorship...(I really am working on that)...until then, DR's kits offer a hell of a nice canvas. (This new DDRIII really kicks *ss!).

PS. Dwayne Dushane is my fileworking hero! ;)

Amazing! That is some beautiful giraffe bone for the scales. I thought it was mammoth ivory.
Excellent work on the bolster, stud, and filework!

Those of you who know me from the CKDF know that I've been a big fan of stabilzed giraffe bone for some time. I have always taken exception when anyone refers to it with disdain as the "poor man's" mammoth...I prefer to take the position that beautiful is beautiful.

I have a number of giraffe bone sets of scales on hand, from Nico (Bernard). Prior to sanding this particular set down to size, I recently showed them to the owner of one of the better knife supply vendors. It was at the Timonium Knife Show here in Baltimore. Upon seeing this set he said "Dennis, I work with mammoth every day. and this is some of the prettiest mammoth I've seen!" His jaw nearly dropped when I told him it was giraffe bone. ;) :)

BTW- As I sanded them to shape, they just got prettier and prettier!

Damn fine work!
You should really consider making your own stuff. You show alot of promise and an Non Kit of that caliber would be a very nice piece indeed!

I am so ready to get into sole authorship...

I'm working on it...Just had to clear a few things out of the way.

Need to finish one more (One of DR's Typhoon's...It's a bali, carved with a Rock'n Roll theme...and my own blade).

Then I'll be tackling my own fixed blade. I've just about worked out the profile...and needless to say, it'll have it's share of embellishment work! ;)

Looking forward to when I can say "It's all mine!"

Thanks,

Dennis Greenbaum

Dennis, If I'm your filework hero, You're gonna have to raise your standards on Hero's. :) Keep up the good work. Dwayne

Excellent work, I hope to see more of your work here on the forum.

Thats an extremely impressive kit knife. Great job, I say skip the fixed blades and go straight into making your own folders :D

Amazing work. I'd be just as proud to own a knife like that as I would a full blown custom. Heck, most customs don't look that good.

Here are the visual things that really make this knife stand out to me:

The filework is more like elegant 'carving' than filework.

The Eggerling damascus bolsters have a gentle vertical pattern, which adjoins the angled spacer, which in turn gently changes to the horizontal lines of the scales. It's a visual transition that works.

The scales have a nice color gradient which begins at the bolsters and then richens towards the end. Just right.

It's a masterpiece by any standard. Congrats of such fine work and material choices!

Thanks again to all of you...

Special thanks to my friend Coop-

That means a lot coming from someone who has seen and handled so many, many wonderful knives. Between your own impressive personal collection, your rapidly expanding (and well justified) reputation as a knife photographer, and your own formidable skills (see "Whose Knife Is this" posted in this forum)...your opinion is always highly regarded.

Thank you.

PS. BTW- Congratulations on a wonderful showing in the new Blade's coverage of the "Invitayional." I was especially blown away by your pics of Tim (Herman)'s new folder...Just gorgeous!
