De-Assist 350?

I was looking at my 350 in detail and I noticed that it had more of a detent that most other Kershaw assisted folders I have.

Has anyone de-assisted their 350? How did it work out? Thanks in advance.

i sure have. the thing is, it worked better on my older ones. maybe the detent was deeper. try it and see if yours works out. you can always put it back.

I didn't realize the 0350 has a detent, I'll have to check mine. I wanted to de-assist my shallot but the spring bar is the detent, so nothing else really holds the blade closed. I am glad to see they have thought about how to easily make them non-assisted and work well just by removing the torsion bar.

It worked fine for me when the torsion bar was broken. Maybe a little easy to open, but I was not concerned.

I actually tried it and it works great! This little 350 actually has a really strong detent so it makes the manual flipping action like butter!

I have a video uploading now which shows it in action.

Good to hear. I like my new 350, but I mostly own non-assisted knives. Hate fighting the spring to close it. Sure opens nice though :). Must have something to do with not being able to eat my cake...

I took the assist out, then ended up putting it back in. I like it more as an AO, BUT it's reassuring to know that if the bar broke I wouldn't be SOL with a pocket knife that has blade flopping around freely (like you would with the 0300 series).

I just took my 0350 apart and removed the torsion bar. It is really smooth as a manual flipper. I really like it this way.

Ooh I gotta try that. I don't like assisted openers and the AO feature has probably been one of the reasons why I don't edc my 0350 that much.

Does not work with mine. The detent is so weak. In goes the torsion bar again...

Upon closer inspection I found a reason for the weak detent. The detent ball is worn out, the part of the ball which is in contact with the blade surface is flattened...

i removed mine today, works great but my blade is horribly off center, i thought it was the tension of the torsion bar that was pushing the blade to the non locking side but after taking out the torsion bar its still the same, ive tried everything, i even tried switching the washers from side to side cause one is bigger than the other but nothing works, anyone else have this problem?, its actually so bad its wearing out the dlc coating, and yes i have tried loosening the pivot etc...

I would love to do this, but my 0350 already has some vertical blade play (no clue how to get rid of it) so I'm a little weary of removing the torsion bar and cranking the pivot down even further. I'm hoping to get a 0350KW that I can do this to and be less worried about since it will be brand new and hopefully have no issues.

Mine was slightly off-center but i was able to adjust it to not rub.

Here's how you adjust it:

First, loosen all the screws, pivot and body, but don't remove them
Second, tighten the pivot fairly tight, but not so tight as to make it impossible to loosen
Third, fold a piece of paper in half a few time and then wedge it between the blade and liner it was rubbing
Forth, tighten down body screws
Fifth, Loosen pivot and adjust as need to get the AO working properly again. At this point your blade should be moved off the liner, though if it was that bad to start it probably wont be 100% centered. Also, this may take a few tries to find just how much 'wedge' you need to move the blade.

Hope this helps and if you have any questions let me know.

Vertical play? do the liner engage fully OR can if be forced to engage more? That's the first 0350 I've herd that's had this issues. I'd contact Kershaw and see what they have to say about it.

The liner engages perfectly, I think the problem lies with the blade stops not contacting the handle well enough. I was thinking of getting in contact with Kershaw, but I always hate having my knives away for so long :( I was hoping it was an easier fix I was missing out there.

The only one I know of is to re-bend the lock bar further inward, thus forcing the blade to open farther/tighter to the blade stop (if that makes sense). Hence my questions about the lock engagement. I can understand not wanting to send it away, but Kershaw's customer service will take care of you, and in my experience they're pretty quick in doing so.

Yep, I will put up a vid on how to fix this today.

When removing the torsion I couldn't get the blade to have no play and also come out as a manual flipper...as now the blade center is totally off. Any tips??? Should I just send it in to kershaw and have them re set the blade etc.

There are plenty of tricks to center the blade if you search.
To remove horizontal blade-play simply tighten the pivot. Minute adjustments can make a big difference in blade tension.
You also may need to improve your flipping method. Just keep practicing.

I wouldn't send it into Kershaw since the problems are your fault, but you should be able to fix them easily. In a simple thing like a knife there are only so many things that can go wrong.
Good luck. :)
