De-assisted a Leek

Today I decide to de-assist my Leek simply because I was curious how the action would be without the assist function. For anyone curious, it didn't turn out great. The knife itself was easy to disassemble and put back together, and the torsion bar came out easily. So I took out the torsion bar, cleaned everything up and gave it a nice coating of lube.

The action on it afterward was rough. I was able to flick it open with the thumb stud, but the flipper tab only served to open it about half way even with a very intentional push. Oh well, I put the torsion bar back in and it works just like before. No harm, no foul. Just thought some of the noobs on here (and maybe some of the vets even) might be curious to hear my story.

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend fellow forumers!

It depends on which leek you have but usually the torsion bar provides the bias towards closure instead of the detent ball. Your blade may not even have a detent hole in it and would require one if you wanted the flipper to be able to build up stored energy for an effective flip.

Thanks for that info. I'm not much of a flipper knife guy. Sold my zt0562cf because I just prefer the thumb stud opening. However, I like the Leek for what it is so decided to put it back together. Did it more out of curiosity than anything else.

Good story. I have maybe half a dozen Leeks. Love them! Great knife!

Beware though. The Leek was my gateway knife. Now, I have over a hundred knives and am much poorer, financially speaking.

Hahaha! It's already too late for me, although I'm not in it at your level yet. Have 4 fixed, 10 modern folders, and twice that in tradotionals.

Traditionals are nice, but they didn't trigger my condition the way modern folders do. <sigh>
