I thought I'd consolidate bits and pieces from other threads. The Merkur blade that shipped with my Merkur DE was fantastic. Lasted 3 weeks, and I probably could have gotten a couple more shaves out of it. I bought some Astra platinums, and they've been lousy on my face. Edge not lasting, cutting me where the Merkur left me BBS.

I'm going to order some various 5 packs and test them. What brand works well for you?

Right now I like Dorco ST301 I find they cut smoothly and no irritation for me and Personas are working for me as well. The Astra Platinum were ok on my face, but the highly touted Feather blades rip me up, and Derby just leave my face irritated. Many online shops offer sample packs made up from blades from different makers to try out, Go with a couple of those and fined what works best for you. I plan on ordering a couple more samplers before making a bulk purchase of one or two blade types. There are 10 different blade samplers on the web site I deal with and I plan on trying them all before making up my mind, the ones I don't like I will give away:p

In my opinion, the three that everyone should try are: Dorco, Derby, and Feather.

I like BIC Chrome Platinum. They're 95% of a Feather for 1/2 the price. I suggest you try them.

www.westcoastshaving.com has some nice sample packs.

I was useing the local Walgreens and Walmart brands for a long time. I wawasn't about to start ordering blades over the net, how much better could they really be? And part of the reason I started de shaving was the cheap cost. Well I saw a deal on Derbies I couldn't pass up. Well what about that they are a big improvement over the local store blades. I'm very happy and think the Derbies are a very worth wile blade to get and use. I'm very tempted to try another brand but am afraid I'll even like something more than the Derbies and I have a butt load of Derbies to use up first. I guess my point is try abunch before you get a bulk pack like I did. One thing I've really noticed everyone seems to like a different blade brand and there is no clear best blade.

Unfortunately, I bought a bulk pack of Astras.... If anyone would like some, shoot me an email and I'll send you a subpack for free. I'm going to try some variety packs, and also some Wally personnas, thanks everyone for their ideas and opinions!

I still can't get over how odd it is that its seemingly impossible for more than 2 people to reach the same conclusion about razor blades.

Whats happening with Astras? I found them to be among the smoothest of the "ack, sharp" blades I'd tried. I'd jump on that if I wasn't out of country.

Also what is the differance between Dorco St-301's, and st-300's?

The Astras are cutting me a lot. The Merkur blade didn't do that, I really don't have an explanation. I'm going to try them all before deciding.

I hear that there is a difference between the St-301 and ST-300 besides the packaging, the 301s are the better blade. I have both the Astra Platinum and Stainless. They both work ok for me, but I like the Dorcos better. I also read it on here when I was looking to start DE shaving that Astra blades tend to vary from pack to pack. I would offer to trade you an unopened 5 pack of Derbies for the Astra but I already have 2 packs of each type of Astra and 5 for 10 just doesn't seem fair
