De-horning a 560?

Flipping my 560 for the past couple day's I've noticed that there are some pretty rough/sharp edges on the jimping and along the top and bottom edges of the handles. The edges were rough enough to cause a bit of discomfort after flipping it for a little while. So, this evening I smoothed them out a bit. I took a fine diamond Lansky hone, and smoothed out the rough edges just enough to make them comfortable. It only took a few minutes, and you couldn't tell just by looking at it. But, it sure made it a lot more comfortable to use. Was a nice, simple, mod that made a big improvement in my 560.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced some rough jimping and edges on the 560's. And, has anyone dehorned their 560 like I have?

I had the sharp jimping issue and I took their edge off with some 20micron SiC paper. All is fine now.

Did you have the rough edges on both the G10 and the Ti? I did. I had to dehorn both sides, top and bottom.

Yup, both sides where your pointer finger hits after flipping it and where the lockbar is milled out.

Mine too. Same exact spots. It's a great knife and so far this is the only improvement I could think of on it. Dehorning it made a big difference in the comfort when using it, and flipping it.

Yeah, mine has that issue. Haven't fixed it yet though. Before I marked up the lock face with a pencil, the jimping on the lockbar was tearing up my thumb too trying to get it to unstick. After pencil lead, not a problem anymore, but I'm still going to smooth it all out.

I used the pencil lead trick on mine too. Its smoothed out nicely now. My lockup looks like it is pretty close to 50%, maybe just a touch more. But, operation is smooth with solid lockup and no blade play. Centering looks spot on as well. I really like the 560. Its a great knife!

Heck, my 0350 had that issue. It went away over a few hundred openings (or the nerves on the tip of my finger just died away).

I’ve been de-horning many of my knives lately. The most recent is my ZT 0170 fixed blade.

The G-10 had rough edges and somewhat uneven fit. Some Leatherman diamond file work followed by some fine grit wet/dry sandpaper made the handle a lot better. (Take the handles off first!) Very little work was needed to achieve great results. I also hit the sharp edges of the sheath to smooth it out. ZT’s sheaths tend to be kind of cheap and smoothing them out helps a lot. The handle looks and feels really great now and is much nicer to use.

It is amazing what just a little sandpaper work will do for a knife. I’ve been hitting all my folders that have sharp edges, especially the on the liners, where it tends to be too crisp of an edge. It really doesn’t take much to get the desired results.

I don’t like it when I have to put a decent edge on a new folder since the factory should have done that in the first place. However, smoothing out anything else besides the edge is cheap and easily done. It makes every knife so much nicer to use, it’s just amazing.

Obviously I use my knives and have no intention of selling/flipping them. Safe queens need no upgrades. Nobody uses them anyway.

...same experience here with the sharp edges, but will leave it be...for those times when I wear gloves.

I hardley EVER wear gloves. And, even when I do, I will alway's take them off to use a knife. So, for me, the sharp edges had to go. It didn't take much either. Just going over them lightly with my fine hone did the trick. Now she's a pleasure to hold and flip.:D

...good for you...she's always been a pleasure to hold and flip.

Kind of up to the individual as to what's sharp or not. If you spend a lot of time working with your hands things might not feel as sharp as they do to someone who pushes paper for a living. My 0560 is just fine for me but that's not so say someone else might hold it and think differently

Yea, I agree. It's pretty subjective. Fella's doing a lot of work with their hands will have less sensitivity to sharp or rough things. I work in corrections. So, the extent of my manual labor at work is watching convicts do all the work.:D Most of the hard work I do is at home, or on the hunting lease.

Agreed. My hands have years of calous on them so I haven't noticed the issues everyone else seems to notice. But then again if they went the other way it could have very well been a complaint of it being too smooth for a hard use folder. Ultimately everybody's hands are different and unless it's built custom to your hand, it's rare to have a perfect fit.
