De-stinking a toolbox

Many years ago, I loaned my screwdriver set to a friend who was having car problems. After he had them for several months, I finally received them back but discovered that he had kept a tube of auto thermostat sealer in the box with them in the hot summer months. My screwdrivers absolutely REEK - to put it bluntly!!

It's been several years since then, and they haven't gotten any less pungent. I can hardly open my toolbox because the stench is just as strong as ever. I've tried soaking them in vinegar, also in a baking soda paste and they still reek.

They are decent Craftsman screwdrivers that I received as a gift many years ago, and am somewhat leery of using harsher cleaners as I don't want to ruin the rubber handles.

Anyone have any tried-and true suggestions or recommendations?

10 parts water to 1 part bleach. Spray on and wipe off or allow to evaporate. Repeat until the stink is gone.

Take them out and bend them, then get them replaced at Sears.

Shouldn't even have to do that..........did they re-write the Craftsman Warranty????

I'd just call Sears, tell them what happened, and see if they'd replace. If you can't stand the smell, you can't use the tool.

If they say no, then start bending.

Oh, and slip some thermostat sealer under the front seat of your buddy's car next July. :D

Just tell Sears that they have a weird odor.

They should replace since they did not "satisfy, for any reason".
