De-stinking nylon gear?

So, got a weird question for you guys...

My daughter has a Maxpedition backpack, and she's done something to it to make it reek. Not just a little... this backpack smells like ass.

We're thinking about soaking it in hot water with some vinegar in it, or possibly a light bleach solution. Anyone out there got good ideas for de-reeking nylon?

Thanks!

since it is a good quality cordura it should take whatever washing method you use. bleach will probably affect the color, though.

id try the washing machine with hot water first. or maybe even the dishwasher.

if you soak it, it will just be sitting in the stink. vinegar will make it smell like vinegar or ass covered with vinegar.

i use a nylon weight lifting belt and when it gets stinky i just throw it into the washer on the gentle cycle.

i sure dont think handwashing it would be a problem.

Try putting it in your freezer for a couple of days.
I have a friend who swears by this method to un-stink his hockey gloves...

Hey Guys...

give it a good spray with Fabreeze...

That stuff works wonders on all kinds of nasty smells

The old tried and true method is to soak in a solution of baking soda ! Baking soda can also be added when washing things .

I would stick that nasty sucker in the washing machine with some Fabreeze!!

OXY CLEAN!!! I use it to clean all my backpacks and nylon bags. Add two scoops and detergent into the wash and it doesn't smell like rotten butt anymore.

I was taught not to use hot water or heavy cleaning stuff on my gear so...1. Fill bucket/tub with luke warm water 2. Put in a little hand soap 3.Get out a wash cloth or other tool 4. Start scrubbing like hell :)

Thanks for the replies! :) Our daughter tried hand-scrubbing it with a brush and some laundry detergent in hot water, and that did no good. Several places I've found online have recommended washing soured towels in a vinegar solution, which seemed to work, so I've let the thing soak overnight in a vinegar-water solution, and am going give it a cycle through the washer next. I'll keep you updated.

When our wet suits get stinky I rinse them in the stuff they sell to remove stains left by poorly trained/ sick pets. It's sold in the pet section of wal-mart. Can't remember the brand name but it works wonders. Hope this helps. Later Ron

Well, I washed it in warm water with baking soda after the vinegar soak (rinsing it in between to avoid the "Elementary School Volcano" effect), and the stink seems to be gone.

Thanks, guys! It would take a lot of her allowance to buy a new Maxpedition pack.

I quickly scanned over that post and thought it said that your pets were leaving stains on your wetsuits:eek:

I obtained a pack off of ebay that smelled like cigarette smoke when I got it. I ran some warm water into our laundry tub and added a couple capfulls of liquid fabric softener. I squished the pack around in there for a few minutes, and then let it sit for a good portion of the day. Upon removal, i rinsed it off a little bit, but not like crazy, and hung it up to dry. That was 3 months ago. I have the pack with me today, and... (picks up pack, holds to nose, and smells) ...it still smells mountain fresh!

Also, the fabric softener gets into the nylon fibers and helps them move smoothly with less friction.

try baby bottle steriliser. It is a non toxic bleach. Doesn't remove colour either, but it does get rid of bacteria and smells.

Another trick is to put it in a pillowcase, tie up the top with string and put it in the washing machine on a 50' hot wash on nylon, permanent press cycle. The pillow case prevents damage and scuffing.

Baking soda. My polypro gear from kayaking used to get an awful funk to it. A little baking soda and gentle washed on cold - everything was good again.

Well, until I took off that wet gear at the takeout, put it in the back of the van, left it baking in the afternoon sun while we drank beer, got home, slept late, gear still baking in van - open door... Dayum!!! Stinky!

Where's that baking soda??

Without reading through, I'll second (or third...) Fabreeze! Used to use it on my football pads in high school and if it could help there, it'll take any stink away!

Spritz with vinegar , place in trash bag, place in freezer. This will kill all the bacteria in the cloth. This is a method I use for my jiu jitsu Gi.
