Ian McShane , I knew the name . It nattered at me . I did not know what part he played in Deadwood . I only saw his name in the credits . Of course he is the owner of the Gem saloon . I still didn,t recognise him . I couldn,t see past the moustache and the attitude . He is also more swarthy and haggard than I remember . A product of make up and age no doubt .

It suddenly hit me where I knew him from . Lovejoy, a very popular series in England . He plays an antique collector/restorer of all things . Not genteel by a long shot . It is still a far cry and a hoot from his role in Deadwood .

Lovejoy is actually a lot of fun . Its mostly light hearted antics involving unscrupulous sellers, buyers and whatnot . There is one episode revolving around a found cannon that is hilarious .

I never saw him in the morally bankrupt, thumb up his asttitude, murdering,Machiavelian, monster he plays in Deadwood .

Kevin, if I ever come up with a manuscript worth reading, I want you to do the title.

I used to like the series Lovejoy, especially the guy with the round face that forged paintings. They were all rogues, but only got their own back on people that were dishonest.

I've never seen Lovejoy (though the dastardly Mr. Swearengen is probably my favorite character on Deadwood). I'm guessing the shock is something akin to seeing Hugh Laurie, who I've previously only known as the bumbling sidekick on Blackadder, playing the title character on HOUSE.

I confess to having seen few of the Lovejoy series . To my dismay. There was one featuring a type of outlawed painting . The painting was of a monarch so detested by the new guy in town that all images of he were banned from the kingdom .

An artist cleverly painted one that could only be seen by placing a reflective cylinder on the center of the painting .

There definitely seems to be a theme of comeuppance in the series . Only when the owner of the painting offered to pay for hit and run damage to Lovejoys truck did he show the secret of the painting .

The one with the cannon was even more striking than that . (Very poor pun intended)

Yep there is a perverse kind of apt incongruity in the title "Deadwood Lovejoy".
Especially in light of the various sexual afflictions evident in the show .
It is only deepened by the chasm of difference between the two series .
