Lads and Lassie's, dad I think someone needs help, we better follow her. OK Timmy, I'll get the truck.................but enough about that.

Sometime back Yangdu sent me a Nabin Rai Balance knife that didn't sing. It hummed pretty good for me and felt much better than it looked. It felt good in my hand but the man face (a pretty ugly dude and hence the lack of music) kind of interfered with larger hands.
You may recall I posted that knife as the invisible man after I removed the face and left just the hat.
Apparently it still didn't sing.

So I finally built up my courage and took the handle off and made a new one. The story of that saga a bit later.

Anyhow up for grabs at Yangdu's suggested price of 145 bucks plus shipping payable to her directly in the usual manner, I give you the newly handled balance knife. She is 14 1/2" long, 21.5 ounces give or take a fraction of an ounce or 1.3#'s for simple folks like myself. She's pretty sharp and pointy and has been bloodied but I didn't cry.
I kind of wanted to.
Comes with a pretty decent sheath that fits works well too.

The handle is Black and White Ebony. Not a lot of black in this piece but quite attractive if I do say so myself.

The handle as is should be quite comfy for an average sized or smaller hand. However with a little file and sandpaper it could easily be modifed for a custom fit by reducing the bell some which would give a bit more length.

I originally intended to try a more conventional handle but things got lost and frankly I'm no Pala when it comes to making a traditional handle. I did create a nice ambi palm swell and left the bell so it's very secure in hand.

Here's a shot with the old handle below which I was so happy to get off intact despite a few difficulties I shall address later.

A shot of the handle a bit closer up.

I'll post a bit about the transition in the next post.

Contact Auntie in the usual manner, email to Yangdu @ himimp@aol.com. I will ship as soon as she tells me where to send it.

Nice work Bawanna. Your handle work really brings this up, and added to that sheath, and shiny, pointy, even blood ritual blade, together that balance collaboration makes a song.

Balance knife transition..............................
As received originally.

A shot with the face removed but handle intact. Felt really good, almost hated to take it off in all honesty.

I used a heat gun (it took a long time to get hot enough to free up the laha but it worked). The handle became quite loose but would not come off. Never one to resort to profanity without just cause I closed the shop doors and prepared to mount a verbal assault filled with longshoremen language.
At this point I was pretty sure that those sneaky kami's slipped a pin in under that wire wrap and this was confirmed, after I gave up on the verbal assault and went for the big get r dun hammer.

The nice sturdy tang with the sneaky pin all bent over from being driven out. Fortunately it was aluminum so it bent pretty easy.

The block of Black and White Ebony prior to sawdust.

Handle shaping after initial fitting and acraglased in place. Miraculously I was able to hit the same pin hole already in the tang so didn't weaken the strong tang on bit. I felt very fortunate. I used a brass pin, smaller diameter but very strong.

Looking from the end. I was going to checker or inlay something there but thought if the handle needs to be modified it might be best to leave as is.

Another profile shot of the palm swell.

I think that about covers it. I have 3 coats of linseed oil on it and will probably do at least one more, maybe more if time allows.

Thanks for looking and hope this one sings to somebody. It sings to me but I can't keep everything, hard as I try sometimes.

That is one sweet rehandling job. Nice one Bawanna. Cool sheath too.

Beautiful knife, love the accompanying story as well.
Thank you for the excellent photo spread.

Nice handle, great work
