Did I make a deal or not????
There is some kind of a lumber company down the street from where I work. Every now and then they will put a pallet or two of assorted wood products that didn't meet their quality control so they throw it out. I picked-up a load of 4x8 pallets made out of 1x2 with 2x2 cross braces. The 1x2 are spaced about 1/2" a part. My shop has cement block walls so it is hard to hang things on it. I'm putting these pallets up behind my workbenches so I can hang tools. Well I drove by there yesterday and there was a pallet of flat square tile looking things out there so I drove in to take a look. WOW!!! I picked up 96 16"x16" wood flooring sample tiles. They are all from a German company called Pollmeier and all of the wood is German Beech.
goto: Pollmeier
The widths and grades of the boards are 2 1/4" select & natural, 3 15/16" rustic and natural and 5 1/8" rustic. The boards have grooves cut in the back and sides because it is flooring so the thickness of the boards would be 1/2" thick finished and you loose about 1/4" in width. So the 2 1/4" board would end up with a board 2" wide by 1/2" thick after trimming. The rustic and natural have some nice looking grain. The select grade has a clean and tight grain. The lengths of the boards vary on each 16x16 tile sample. Some of the boards are 16" long, some are 8" and some are 10" and 6". Beech is a very hard wood with a nice warm yellow color. You can find a chart on the web site listed above. I think this will make some very nice knife handles. I don't think I have ever seen any knives made out of it. So...what do you think did I get a deal  or not :thumbdn: ?
