Dealers in NYC?

Hey... does anyone know of any knife dealers in NYC or the NYC area? While I love ordering online, and probably am saving some money doing so, there is a certain lack of satisfaction in being able to hold the knife before you lay down money for it! The only shops I've seen around are all in China town or Port Authority area which sell all the fake rip-offs... anyone know where the real dealers are??? thanks! Pheroze

I have a friend who lives in NYC and knows of a *very* good knife shop. Unfortunately, I don't know the name or location off the top of my head.

Drop me an e-mail at jbos6@hotmail.com, and I'll see what I can find out for you.

Dirt, the only one is Paragon at 18th and Broadway. Nice selection but very pricey.
A better alternative for you would be to contact philL here at bladeforums and get the info on the Empire Knife club that meets one Wednesday a month on Conklin Ave. in Brooklyn. They have a swap meet/mini knife show after every meeting with lots of buying and selling of all types of knives going on.
Hope this helps,
Dave

Hey,
Thanks for the help guys... I've been to Paragon many a time... but it is pretty pricey. They more or less sell for exactly the manufacturers retail price, which got me wondering if they had the corner on the market here! But thanks for the suggestions! Pheroze

It depends on what you are looking for. Paragon probably is the most comprehensive shop for custom and production knives. However a number of non-specialist shops in midtown sell a limited range of spydies, crkts, gerbers and benchmades. It would be asking a bit much for shops paying Manhattan rents to offer online-level prices, of course, but then you might feel less compunction about looking and not buying at a shop that primarily sells tourist knick-knacks or shaving kits. Most likely, at such places you won't develop the kind of rapport with the salesman that you would in an enthusiasts' shop.

If you like gadgetry, you could look in Self Defences, which is in midtown. They have BMs and possibly spydies or gerbers or crkts as well as pepper spray, mini-flashlights and Other Good Things. Again, don't expect online prices, though. Outdoor shops like EMS sell a small selection of knives and multi-tools and I have even seen Leatherman multi-tools in Century 21 (!)

Good hunting.

Paragon is the standard, but Iceberg Army/Navy on Bway and Grand has a good selection too. Iceberg and Paragon were the only places I found anything worth looking at when I lived in NYC.

Just off of 6th Ave on Bleeker Street, there is a leather and goods shop. Last time I was there they had a whole bunch of Spyderco's, CRKT's Bucks, a whole bunch of fixed blades that looked custom and 2 or 3 Reeve's... Prices were better than average but still not as good as most mail order companies. However I did not try to haggle them down on anything...

I've look at all the shops mentioned here, Paragon is by far the best for selection, but I haven't bought a knife in NYC (except for a knife show) in many years.
Lifter mentioned the Empire Knife Club, it's a great place to pickup or trade all kinds of knives. Nice bunch of guys I don't get there as often as I liked to. They meet the second Wed. of each month, E-mail me if you want more info.

If youre willing to travel a bit outside NYC, there are several knife dealers in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island.
The Bladesman and T&T Gunnery in Seaford. T&T also has a shop in Floral Park. Then there is American Outdoor Sports on Rt 110 in Farmingdale. AOS had a large selection at good prices last time I checked. Good luck.

If you want to take a ride, there's JT's Knife Shop and Military surplus in Port Jervis. Maybe 1 1/2 hrs. from the city but good selection of productions and customs, nice people, pretty scenery.

This topic has come up a few times before but this is the first time I've heard of places out of town and a monthly show. Great! Are they within reasonable taxi distance from Manhatten?[doubt it] Do they have a web presence or some other easy access?
I would never buy a custom at Paragon because of their insulting prices. I'd rather pay my money to a dealer, maker or a BFF member rather than be just another sucker. I just stand there and drool... that's nothing new to a NewYorker

Speaking of high prices, there is the Barrette-Smythe "gallery" in midtown. Some really fancy and unique pieces, with prices to match.
Also, here and there scattered in Madison Avenue and 57th stores you'll find the occasional custom[gives me something to do when the wife shops]. Barretta, Holland & Holland etc usually have something. Often the prices are stupid, but sometimes there is something interesting at an OK price.

It's surprising that in NYC, where you can find just about anything... you can't find good knives that easily... are there laws restricting their sale? I know the carry law is 4" or under. I wouldnt see why there would be a law restricting the sale of knives because of all the cheap little stores that sell all sorts of crazy weapons! I'm interested in maybe checking out this once a month knife meeting in brooklyn... alright! happy knife hunting everyone! Pheroze

Actually I am discovering that you CAN'T find just about anything and when you do, it is almost always at an unrealistic price. But this is a digression...

Dear Kmclye,

As a native New Yorker, I've found a whole bunch of products at good prices, but you need to know where to look. You can buy groceries at a Food Emporium and pay scandalous prices, or go to a Walbaum's, Pathmark, or one of the Chinatowns and get better quality for lower prices.

If you have a particular ax, e-mail me and I'll see if I can steer you to a place with a good selection and reasonable prices.

I agree... if you look hard enough you can always find a bargain on anything... thats the beauty of so many stores competing with each other. In New York it all depends where you live, if you live up near times sq or midtown, even most of the village, things are going to be much pricier. Out in Clinton Hill and East Williamsburg (my main haunts) prices take a tumble!
Back to the competition thing though, that's why Paragons knife prices are so high, because of the lack of competition with other retail stores... i say go there, check out the knives, and see what you like... and order it online... like i said in my first post above though, the only thing i miss about that is trying out the exact knife you buy. But for production knives, the difference won't be too drastic. Pheroze

Clinton Hill, Brooklyn Heights, and soon to be Gowanus Heights!! No kidding. Clean the canal up a bit and start erecting some steel beams and watch the potential inhabitants scramble to the developers and real estate companies for a place in line.

But back to knives. Iceberg of Soho Army and Navy at B' Way and Grand has a huge selection of production models and at full retail. Tourist area...

Paragons has quite a collection of handmades and customs. Can you imagine their rent??

Further out in the islands, as already mentioned, American Outdoor Sports has showcases of knives available. Some very early stuff collecting dust just begging the bargain hunter to buy. TNT always seem to have some handmades on hand. A few friends picked up an early Busse Mean Street, Mike Irie survival, and some vintage EKs and Blackjacks. Whew!

Did someone mention about "laws" in NYC? Do you know who our 2 state senators are?

BTW, the 4" blade length limit is a NYC Administrative Code, not LAW. In NY State, there is NO mention in its Penal Code article 265 concerning blade length restrictions.

Just a comment on the prices in NYC. They suck! Bigtime. I know its not a taxi or subway ride, but if you do drive, and you do so on a nice sunny day, the drive to Long island isnt that bad, American Outdoor Sports is at worst an hour from the city, 45 minutes decently. Just take the LIE to Route 110 south and go about 3 miles. Put it to you like this, I paid 75 dollars for a benchmade 705, and 90 for an Osbourne 770, both Axis locks. Thats just those. Unadvertised sales was going on, and they happen quite a bit from my understanding. Can you find the above mentioned items online for less? I doubt it very much. Knives in NYC will cost you dearly. I wouldve spent easily 125 dollars more on the two knives I mentioned had I tried to do so here in the city. A few bucks in gas money, and the time, versus helping someone pay exorbitant rent in manhattan.
