Dealing with the obsession

I am getting rammy to get back out into the woods and start hiking and camping again. I've been working weekends on a second contract job and the weather has not been conducive to getting the family out into the wilderness (they aren't really into it, unless it's nicer than this out). Now to my obsession, I need to play with my BK2. I can't help it. I've cut up just about everything I can in my backyard. Demolished the Christmas tree. Have batoned wood pieces till they were the size of freaking pencils. I've resorted to preparing, making, and eating dinner with my BK2 for this past work week. My wife doesn't even make fun of me about it anymore, I think she knows I just need to use my BK2 hahaha.

How do you deal with the obsession? Anyone else have to mess with their Becker daily?

Yep, I deal with it by EDC'ing my Bk2. I jump at the chance to use it for... well anything. Pretty much exactly like you described. I was questioned by my neighbor recently wondering why I just now decided to trim the hedges in the back yard... I simply told him it was easier to do it now with the leaves off and its not _as_ cold.

I also spend lots of time keeping every one of my tools in a crazy sharp state. Sharpening brings me a sort of zen feeling because I can use my knives and improve their cutting ability. Another way I deal with the obsession is modifying my cheep knives. I get practice on them so if the time ever came for me to work on one of my "good" knives I'll be more experienced with how or what I need to do to accomplish my vision for it.

Went to a local wood craft shop the other day while I was off and picked up a few boards of pricy wood with pretty nice patterns on it. I think I'm going to re-handle / make scales for our kitchen knives first (practice practice practice) then think about making some for my 2 and other fixed blades.

Lastly I deal with my obsession here, and looking to find the best deals I can online for the knives that I want :)

Keep on fighting, only a few more months until nice weather again!

I know what you mean about the modding. One of the mods I have been putting off but seriously am considering doing is adding a choil. I've seen some very nice ones done here and have the tools on hand to get it done. I'm just not confident enough to give it a try.

Please make sure to show some pics of the handles if/WHEN you make them. Thanks for the words of encouragement hahaha. It's nice to have company in the loony bin!

I gotcha on that. Last night I used a BK11 to cut up some t shirts for rags to stain some wood for a project I'm doing. Most fun I've had with a knife in a well...which is sad.

Well at around 10:30am I was told I could go home for the day since I've started work early all week. Well I did a choil!!!! I knew I couldn't resist any further lol. Wife at work, kids at school, dad home from work early and all alone........HOW COULD I RESIST?!

I'll start by saying I was wearing a respirator mask and safety glasses but they are not pictured. I did not want to put the knife in a vice and do it that way since I like to do things by feel and flow (sounds weird but it's how I do it) just like I do my stippling etc. I'd recommend heavy tape on the edge like I used so you don't have any accidents. I went super slow and the blade never even got warm so the heat treatment is fine.

Here's what I used:

Slow starts figuring out the distance and depth by feel:

Shaping it still for aesthetics:

Getting the final shape I want and depth for final sanding:

Finished sanding with 650 grit and then 1500 grit wet paper to make sure it was rounded and silky smooth where I dremeled..DONE!!!

All-in-all, I FLIPPING LOVE IT! It looks great and should be functional for my needs. It took me about 20 minutes total. WOOT

Looks good man.

And Yea, I am obsessed. I keep a few inside and use daily in the kitchen and around the house, But most of them are in a dedicated rolling tool box full of knives. I have to go out to the garage a couple of times a week and touch them all. No lie. haha. If not I get a jittery and stuff. And I find myself stropping at least 3 or 4 blades a day. And I usually get the urge to cut some wood so I have a baton and large log to chop on within 15 feet of my front door. And also a few sticks and stuff to carve on when I feel the need.

My Becker knives are like a part of my family. And the hardest thing is deciding what three to take with me when I leave the house. Usually my 11 on my belt, then something like a 16 in my edc bag, and then I throw a larger knife like the Brute, BK-12, 9, 10, or something similar under my front seat.

Life would be so much easier if I only a couple of knives.

Hahaha man this is a sickness! I'm glad to share company with so many others that feel my pain. Hey at least we are staying active and getting a lot of fresh air right?

I was reading this thread and thinking about my situation.
About the same as ya'll, winter has her grip on us, a box full of neglected Beckers and others.
They are all SHARP, striped, oiled and dressed in nice leather and Kydex.
My wife know I have a "KaBar" and to her they all look the same (I Think), but really has no idea just how many "KaBar's" their are around here. Almost daily there is a blade on the stone or a sheath in process. Any way, she just rolls her eyes and says something like how sharp are you going to get that thing, or wow that's a nice skirt (condescending term for sheath)...
I'm running out of stuff to do on the current arsenal of blades around here and about to start making micarta and sanding wood scales. Its getting desperate up here in Michigan where it has snowed almost every day since Christmas (I think, cant really remember in not snowing) OH am I ready for spring, or at least above freezing temps.
