oooooh! I must admit I'd thought I'd kicked HIKV, but that Dui Chirra nearly reached into my pocket and yanked out my Visa card

I just don't have the money, but if I did!!!

#3 is a nice Bura hanshee there. Great knife. That Dui Chirra is just incredible. I have one but it does not have a handle pin as I recall, and certainly is not chandan. Beautiful! Mine is the same length but heavier at 36 oz., and has a brown scabbard. Someone is going to be very happy.

BTW, I remember discussion in the past about the strength of the hidden tang handles on these Berk's Specials, but was never concerned about it as they seemed very robust. Looks like Bura is just adding a little insurance with that pin. First one I recall ever seeing.

Norm

I have stuff on the way, and also bought a Bura Special 3 weeks ago.
I need to take a breath and wait.
The 15" Bura Special has the lines of a small GRS - and chops well too. They are nice knives.

I haven't seen a dui chirra in a long time. I couldn't help but noticing that the handle was pinned as well. Very nice.

Whoever gets it, please post what your tender pouch insert looks like?
I keep thinking mine is defective, but cannot find out for sure... Mine is open on BOTH ends...

I think that's normal, all the ones I've seen are open on both ends.

Let's hope that the kamis start pinning the handles on all of the partial tang models. That would be a welcome development.

I'll be interested to see a field report on the pinned handle on the dui chirra. While the pin is not faithful to the original, which seems to have stood up to a little more than a century without the extra precaution, there's no doubt that the HI dui chirra is a lot heavier than the original as well, so maybe a good idea. Looks quite nice, too.

Got the Dui Chirra... I' ll post info on the tinder pouch when I get it.

What a scramble... I saw the Dui Chirra and fired off the e-mail. then, I saw the Baby Ganga Ram and had all kinds of problems trying to send the next one and it was *GONE* [sigh]

You'll like it I'm sure. With the chandan on such a big blade, the pin is a good idea, and Bura was probably thinking of that wood specifically when he put it in. I don't think the harder woods would require it. It does add a nice touch, and is what they use on the Garuds as well, especially as they have a fatter handle.

I have 3 of them, 22" and 36 oz., one like this with chandan and red leather scabbard but at 18" and 26 oz. (cost more than this one at the time, but is the only one in that length I have seen), and a nice little 15" and 17 oz. one, all with tools.

They are called the "Berk's Special" in honor of the designer and forumite Berkley.

Thanks. I'm a little leary of the crackwood handle. And, I hate the red scabbards. But the blade looks beautiful, it has white metal fittings and I love little tools...even though I couldn't really recognize all of these from the picture...

E-mail sent on that little satisal handled siru. Cute little stinker, just couldn't resist. :D

I usually don't like the red scabbards. But this one is a really nice color and matches the chandan handle so well.

Sarge, I knew you had to be looking at that little siru. The wood looks beautiful. And if you don't need to do serious chopping, there isn't a much more usefull blade than a 12" or 15" Siru.

Steve,
Regardless of the Duck's philosophical perspective, owning a "DiNky liTtle toY khuKri" doesn't necessarily make one unmanly. Still, I've got more friends than I do khukuris, so I never seem to be able to hang onto the littlest sirupatis. If this one's a "keeper", I'll give the blade the old lemon juice and mustard treatment to try and make it ugly as sin. Might make it easier to hang onto.
"Dashain special"? I clearly remember Uncle Bill's stern admonitions, to test any khuk made during the holidays with extra care. Yup, this one's going to get beat on a bit before it goes on my belt.

Believe me, once you get a few dozen plain black ones, this looks very good. The leather on these is beautiful IMO. The one on my big Dui Chirra is a butter soft brown with some darker tan accents. As the handle is a light colored satisal like everyone else has pretty much on that model, it really sets it off. The 18" chandan handled scabbard is a light red/brown. Not quite as bright red as this one. This one matches the handle better, but the slight contrast between red and red/brown is also nice. The little one has a standard black scabbard.

You can tell folks that you have the first chandan Dui Chirra and the first with a pin.

If the red scabbard continues to annoy you, I'll be glad to take the hideous thing off your hands for $20 or so... :D
