Oh boy...I'm about to be a first time new owner of an HI product that I've been looking into for well over a year. Tirtha Bowie, here it comes!

Congrats on the Tirtha:) It's one of my all time favorite Bowies to come out of the HI shop. I requested one for a planned trip through black bear country where my firearms permit doesn't reciprocate. Yeah, I know you should never bring a knife to a bear fight, but if I HAVE to regulate my self defense to bear spray and a knife, well you better believe that I'm going to bring one stout, big bladed, nasty blade;)

The Tirtha Bowie is a fantastic blend of balance and power. Agile enough to whip through the air or even land a backcut. Heavy enough to split kindling and has a long enough handle to get a hand and a half on it. Great fighter/utility knife

Aaah Man,
OldeWolf you OldeWolf. I wanted that :(. But congratulations anyway you earned that one ;).

Just joined the forum! I've been a lurker for a while. Glad my decision to start my membership coincided with a DOTD. Sorry MaxPower; I might have gone outside of forum etiquette since I immediately sent an email to Yangdu an hour and half ago about the karambit, even though I hadn't even completed my registration. If that's the case I wouldn't mind at all giving you the option to take it.

Just for future reference, in the event of a dotd. I should post my intent to purchase on the forum and then email, correct?

First, Welcome aboard el chupa nibre. Glad to have you with us.

There was talk a little while back regarding DOTD etiquette. Some felt it proper to post your intentions so that others wouldn't feel silly or slighted posting their "Email sent" only to find out that it was taken. I am not of that ilk. If you lurked and sent an email first, then its yours and you sharked well. In reading the Archives, many khukuris were taken this way by people that we never or rarely heard from on this Forum. So, do it however you feel comfortable.

Enjoy your kerambit and, if you feel like it, please pass your observations on to the rest of us. Please, read the Safety Sticky.

Rick

The hungriest sharks lurk in the darkness. The DOTD is a feeding frenzy. Some give warning before they attack, some dont. When the water clears, most sharks describe their win, hoping it will help the virus. But some remain in the depths keeping their virus secret. The thing with the HIKV is; Everyone infected will get what they need sooner or later, no matter what it takes. Those that have had the HIKV longer than me can probably describe this better. What? Research for a cure. Hah!

The rule for the DOTD is the first to email, receive notification, then pay. You do not have to post.
The rule of the forum is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". HI is where friends gather.

Just joined the forum! .... Sometimes it's a bit of a race to get one of these deals. If someone is not yet registered or does not want to register with the forum, there's nothing wrong with just rushing off an email to Yangdu, as you did.

However, once a person is registered, it seems good etiquette to inform other forumites that you are claiming an item. It saves others the trouble of sending their own emails, or thinking that they got a dotd and being disappointed. Sometimes people are agonizing about whether to claim a particular deal (that's certainly been true with me). Knowing that someone else has already claimed the item makes it easier to "let go."

That's what I think about it. However, "etiquette" is really just a guideline, not a rule. My wife constantly gets after me for violating etiquette at the dinner table or being "uncouth" in other ways, so who am I to talk?

Thanks for the welcome guys.

I think in the future, I will abide by the "informal" etiquette here. From my months of lurking here, there is definitely a culture of camaraderie here which is one of the reasons why I joined up in the first place (nice to be in the company of people who share a fascination with blades; my gf thinks I'm so strange lol). The other being of course to acquire various knives from HI. :D Here's to hoping that Yangdu emails me back with confirmation of me winning the knife. That would be sweet.

Welcome to the forum:) I hope you "won" the kerambit. I've had a few of them over the years, and it is probably my most often carried HI piece:)

Just received confirmation from Yangdu! Sent payment. Should be receiving the karambit shortly!

Gunz, it was actually your post that first drew my attention to the HI karambit. Thanks! I'm a little poorer but one knife richer :D

LOL, well like Uncle Bill said, "Debt is good":) Enjoy your kerambit in good health. Take care it and it'll take care of you. We'd love to read a little review on it if you feel compelled to do so:)
