The flute looks really cool. As a person who has never been musically talented, I have to ask, do you try to apply what you learned with say, a clarinet, or do you just toy with a new instrument that's outside the norm until you get a feel for it?

Or is said flute meant to look cool on the bookshelf?

I plan to toy with it. I have no experience with any wind instruments. Well, except for the didgeridoo that I'm trying to figure out how to play as well. I've been able to generate "the sound" a little bit with that. Hopefully the flute will be easier. If I'm lucky it will retain some of the spirit of the Kathmandu Newari people who created it and maybe guide me on my journey. Guess I'd rather have too many hobbies than too few.

Here's the song Auntie sent to inspire me:

Very nice looking flute! I love the idea of scoring one like that... but I have zero musical talent and it would be wasted just sitting on my shelf gathering dust.

I second that hobby goal. Got about 15 major things I need to learn lined up. Flute playing may come after archery. You cannot have too many hobbies, a static life is too close to death for my taste. I'll be keeping an eye out for more flutes, if it gets half as much love as HI steel, it will all but play itself.

Isn't Auntie awesome?

Hmmm, I wonder if we'll see an HI longbow next :D

I got a nice 72# longbow last month (present from my wife before she shipped out to COT). That would be a cool one.

Surprised the M43 is still here. It's a pretty one.

I know I'm a small guy and whatnot, but how the hell do you handle a 72 pound draw? 35 makes me have sore arms during even a short session. What model did you get? I chose to "re-learn" on a Samick Stingray thanks to my stubbornness and working with recurves as a kid.

The M43 makes me ponder. What does everyone mean by "white metal". I had a white metal belt-knife (not from here) a long time ago and no matter how much oil I put on the thing, it would rust if you looked at it wrong.

I'm 5'10", FWIW. It's a tough bow to draw, but definitely doable, and man, it hurls arrows down range like nobody's business.

HI white metal doesn't seem to be particularly rust prone, from the examples I have. Not sure what it is, but it's my preference, if I have a choice.

Same height here. I bet it does launch those arrows.

I don't even remember what blade it was that was white metal and rusted so easily, traded it off to a friend too. Just googled white metal, seems to be an umbrella term for a number of alloys. But I'll take your word that HI white metal is good, every blade purchased from this site has been good to excellent quality, and rust have been a non-issue. Hell, I purchased a large butcher's blade "Gowa" from HI a long time back. Need to figure out a good way to post pictures here, cause this knife has been through large-kitchen hell and come back unscathed. Doesn't rust, grows only a light patina that comes off with use, holds an edge better than a knife designed for this, etc etc etc. Wish a french knife would pop up for a special. Been looking at Japanese steel for a while, need better edge retention badly.

Murray Carter makes some very attractive Japanese kitchen knives.
