I was breaking down a 12 pack soda-pop box and made an error and the blade closed... to the Half Stop , saving my finger , if it had been a Slip Joint with out a Half Stop i would of cut myself bad!! this knife has just earned a place in my carry routine , anyone else saved by a Half Stop ??
the knife ........
Case Mini Trapper

I too will find all sorts of ridiculous unnecessary tasks to do, just to be able to have an excuse to use my knife, but even I just tear the 12-pack cartons up with my hands or mash them flat with my foot.

I’m glad your finger is safe, though, and I will definitely remember and regret having mocked you next time I cut myself…

foot flatten is mad fun !!! no need messing with packing tape

I can’t say I prefer a half stop or not. Nor can I say it’s ever saved me. But I don’t ever recall doing something that the blade closed on my fingers. I tend to nip myself with the tip doing stuff though.

Sorry to further derail this thread, but I just realized that my EDC has FIVE stops on closing, so that’s five times better, right? Except that it locks open anyway 🤔

When I was a kid, my first knife was an Imperial jackknife with hollow metal covers, faux jigged bone over the metal. We were playing with a refrigerator box, and I decided to cut a window in it with my knife. It was plenty sharp enough to both cut a hole in the box and lay open my finger when it closed on me while doing it.

I still use EDC cutlery to break down boxes when needed. Razor knives are for drywall and carpet, and maybe some roofing material - unless I’m doing one of those, I never touch them.

Once I was doing something with my GEC 97, then needed to put it away for a moment and decided just to stick it into a wooden board I was sitting on. It closed... to the half-stop, so it saved my day no doubt. Never stick a slipjoint construction knife into hard materials. Unless they have super strong spring...

If the blade is securely controllable via 'pinchability' or with an easily accessible nail nick, I wouldn't have any reservations about them. Some combinations, like very small folders with very small blades or very shallow nail nicks, are sometimes more challenging to grip securely and control when closing - also more difficult to keep fingertips out of the way of the closing blade. Add the strong closing snap of a blade with a square tang and things can get a little bit dicey when closing the blade sometimes, or even opening a blade if one loses control of it and it snaps shut again.

I believe a half-stop can be a nice thing as a complementary part of a well-designed and well thought-out set of features in a folder. But by itself, it can sometimes be an unnecessary complication in some configurations.

I have been hurt more by blades with 1/2 stops - while opening - and so try to avoid 1/2 stops mechanisms on folders. I have not succeeded but those with the 1/2 stops are not regulars users. Never understood the need for a 1/2 stop. The blade is never intended to be used in a half open position so why stop it? Just requires more deliberate action and attention to open and close. Good save for the OP but more often than not the 1/2 stop is detrimental to me.

To be fair, my work day edcs are all one handed opener and closers. My slip joint and lock back traditionals require a different action to deploy and so a retraining of my muscle memory with each use. That's just me. :( I do own and use some beauties with 1/2 stops.

After giving it some thought. I prefer no half stop. A half stop is no bother when you’re on the porch drinking coffee. But when you are in the heat of battle (boxes, splinters, other daily cutting tasks) and you need to close the knife against your leg and slip it back into your pocket in a jiffy, the half stop is a hinderance.
