Dear Og, can H-1 steel get bloody sharp...

From what i understand, one of the supposed "downsides" of H-1 steel is that it doesn't take a scary-sharp edge, and it doesn't hold that edge....

i'd like to dispute the first "downside", i've dilligently sharpened and stropped my Pacific Salt to a scary-sharp, hair popping edge, it's been holding that edge fine so far, but today, at lunch, the Pac. amazed me in a number of ways....

i had ordered a toasted Reuben on sourdough bread for lunch, when i got back to work with this delicious, overstuffed sandwich of meaty, sauerkrauty goodness <drool> it was clear i had two options in order to eat it;

1; dislocate my jaw and hope for the best
2; cut it in half with my PE Pac. Salt

as a card-carrying Knifeknut, i chose option 2, as it would be the first real-world test of the Pacific

generally, serrated edges are preferred for cutting breads and meats and such, but the Pacific sailed right through the sandwich like it wasn't there, no squishing, sawing, or compressing of the bread, test 1 passed, the knife emerged from the sandwich triumphantly coated with Thousand Island dressing and other sandwich juices

Pacific Salt 1, Sandwich, 0

i then took it into the bathroom to clean it, i ran it under tap water to rinse the bulk of the sandwich innards off it (mmmm....sandwich innards....), then grabbed a paper towel and bunched it up, and drew the knife through it, blade up, spine towards my palm a couple times to get the stuff off it

i went back to my desk to eat, after a few minutes, i felt a slight stinging in my left index finger, i looked at it....

the Pacific had *shaved* off a crescent shaped flap of skin about 1/4" long, and 1/8" wide at it's thickest point, and a couple MM thick (thank Og for calluses... ;) ), there was no blood, it didn't cut beyond the second epidermal layer, it *shaved* a slice of skin off my fingertip and i didn't even feel the cut until the sandwich juices got into the cut while i was eating, talk about surgical precision....

bear in mind, in order to cut my finger, it had to cut through a couple layers of wadded up paper towels to do so, now *that's* a sharp knife....

i'm really starting to *love* H-1, sharpens up quick and easy, totally rustproof, and takes a *killer* edge to boot....

The Pacific Salt is great in the kitchen.
Just a few swipes on the flats (mine's plain edge) of the white Sharpmaker stones every now and then and you're good to go.

That's where mine is. (kitchen) I just took off the clip, and tossed it in the knife drawer. Once I let it lay in the sink with water and potato and onion peals for three days with no sign of any rust. It rutinely sits in the dishwasher for two or three days with no problems.

I've found H1 doesn't hold a "skin and hair" grabbing edge like 440V or s30V, but it still cuts very well. I think part of it is that I reprofiled the edge to a shallower angle because I wasn't happy with the sharpness out of the box. I have noticed that I can just strop it on my pants and the bring back the "grabbiness" though.

H1 is one of my favorite steels. I'd love to see Spyderco make a higher end model with it.

I have the Salt 1 PE and Tazman Salt SE (both with yellow FRN) and can't recommend them highly enough. Have resharpened them several times on everything from ceramics (doublestuff), India medium stones, Norton combo stones and Arkansas soft, in addition to the SM that everyone loves. In all cases have managed to achieve a spooky sharp edge without reprofiling. Sharpens everybit as good as AUS8A or VG-10, and hold the edge for days worth of heavy use. If you haven't had a chance to try one, you should. They are rapidly becoming my favorite for EDC. Other people I've loaned them to love them too because of the yellow handles (less tactical in appearance). Just my $.02.

+1 for the Salt 1 PE. After debating whether to order one online, I went into a camping store in town I haven't been to in a while. I didn't think they would have anything. Turns out in the last year they've become the biggest Spyderco dealer in the province. Scored a Salt 1 for only $10 more than online. Sharpest edge I've had out of the box yet. Great EDC, it has temporarily replaced my Ritter Grip.

My Salt knives take a very scary sharp edge and its very easy to get. It is true the plain edge ones don't keep it quite as long as some of the super steels but in my opinion mine surpass AUS6 and keep up with AUS8 steel so I wouldn't discount H1 as being inferior. Then there is the rust proof maintainance free steel thing that more than makes up for any shortfalls in the edge keeping; as does the ease of getting a great biting edge back when the time comes.

I love the Pacific Salt!

I'm having a real tough time deciding which knife I like better, the Pacific Salt or the new Endura 4.

My Pac Salt is razor sharp as well...love it! I am anticipating higher end knives from Spyderdo in H-1...I think they are working on that now.

I LOVE my Salt I SE!! I use it nearly every day at work, and it has yet to let me down. And the best part: if it gets a little dull, a quick strop on some cardboard and its back to allmost shaving sharp!
