Decalcified bone for scale?

It might be a very naiv question but cannot resist to ask: is there any way to make bone less fragile and more suitable for large blade scales for heavy use?
One idea that came to my mind is soaking the bone in acid (e.g. acetic acid) to extract/dissolve some of the calcium that makes it brittle. I know that bones can be made soft to the point that one can make a knot on them. Probably, they also change color from white to more yellowish during the process. Anyway, is there any process like this known?
Thanks in advance,

HM

mikeS: Have you used vinegar on bone?
BTW, vinegar contains acetic acid.
