Hello I’m new to the forum so you’ll have to go easy on me but I’m hoping someone here will be able to give me some advice.

A good friend of mine recently passed away. Ive been missing him a lot and the only thing that have to remember him by is a knife that he gave me a couple years ago. It’s a big ol’ fixed blade that’s very similar in size a shape to the Rambo knife from the movies. Complete with the handle compartment and everything. I absolutely cherish it but regret that because of its size I can’t use it as an EDC. It’s gotta be at least a foot long end to end. I hate to see it just sit on a shelf and wanted to know if any of you have ever heard of a company that would be willing to reshape into a more practical size.

I realize that this is a long shot. I’ve already tried emailing several custom knife companies in hopes that one would be willing to work with me but no luck. One company recommended I reach out for help here on your forum to here I am. I suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and cheers!

I don't like this idea at all. Once the knife is repurposed, it's NOT the knife your buddy favored and gifted to you.

A fixed blade is an inconvenient EDC in any event, too.

Me? I'd simply purchase a beautiful shadow box display mount for the wall. Hand finish it yourself.

Forget the shelf, hang it framed on the wall with a photo of him inside and an RIP statement. You will smile every time you view it.

Budget: That would cost you $100 or so.

Repurposing this knife may cost $500-$1000, and you may not like it.

Thanks for asking. Welcome.

Jim

I whole heartedly second that ^^.
Keep it as is think about the gift and giver often.
Consider what may be more useful in a practical application and begin the search for YOUR carry knife.

I agree with your post, with the exception of this statement.

I will acknowledge that that particular knife, going by the description posted, isn't something I would regularly carry...but I do routinely carry/use fixed blades, as do many others here.

Sounds like a really bad idea. Grinding and cutting a harden blade to that extent is a recipe for disaster

Just adding on to the "Don't" pile. 90% of the time, they don't come out aesthetic looking, and many times they just feel off as working knives. It takes a lot of work to rework a knife, especially a combat or modern survival knife into something nice.

Perhaps have a maker make you a more usable tribute knife in the style of your friend's.

Not sure I agree; the technical problems of reshaping the knife to a more useful EDC size/shape may be correct. OTOH, I suspect his friend gifted him the knife for his friend to use and enjoy. I don't think his friend would mind him changing the design up to become more practical at all. The knife is not the important thing, rathjer the thought and the love between the two guys. IMHO I believe he would honor his friend more by actually using the knife (and thinking fondly of his deceased friend every time) rather than turning it into a safe queen.
